Marvel’s ‘Zodiac’ Series May Have Been Hiding in Plain Sight Since ‘Agent Carter’
Marvel Television surprised fans at New York Comic Con when Brad Winderbaum announced ‘Zodiac’, a brand-new live-action spy thriller headed to Disney+ in 2028. Filming is set to begin in London next spring, and the show’s logo, which features a S.H.I.E.L.D.-style eagle, has already sparked plenty of speculation.
In the comics, the Zodiac cartel first appeared in ‘Avengers’ #72 in 1970 as a group of 12 supervillain leaders, each representing a sign of the zodiac. Its leader, Scorpio, is Jacob Fury, the envious younger brother of Nick Fury.
Now, eagle-eyed fans believe Marvel may have planted the seeds for ‘Zodiac’ years ago. A viral post points out that the name was already mentioned in the ‘Agent Carter’ One-Shot, the short film set in the aftermath of ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’.
In the short, Peggy Carter is sent on a mission to retrieve something known simply as Zodiac. A mission brief stamped with the word “Zodiac” even appears on screen, giving fans a clear visual reference to point back to.
The post has fans wondering whether the mysterious item could be connected to the new series. Some have even speculated it could be linked to an unknown substance or a surviving sample of Steve Rogers’ Super-Soldier Serum, though Marvel has not confirmed any connection.
Directed by Louis D’Esposito, the ‘Agent Carter’ One-Shot was released as a bonus feature on the ‘Iron Man 3’ Blu-ray in 2013. Set one year after Captain America’s disappearance, it finds Peggy stuck on desk duty at the Strategic Scientific Reserve despite her wartime heroics.

One night, a phone call reveals the location of the enigmatic Zodiac. Frustrated at being sidelined, Peggy heads out on an unauthorized solo field mission, takes down the guards, and secures the target herself.
The item turns out to be a vial of blue liquid, believed to be a dangerous chemical capable of destroying an entire city. Notably, the vial features a symbol resembling the Zodiac Key, an advanced energy weapon wielded by Scorpio and other members of the comic book group.
The Zodiac thread didn’t end with Peggy. In the Marvel Infinite comic ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier Prelude’, a terrorist group led by a man named Baxter steals the vial decades later.
Do you think the show has something to do with this One-Shot or has the studio forgot about it? #Marvel #AgentCarter #Zodiac https://t.co/XchM78UEAY

Steve Rogers ultimately completes the mission his beloved Peggy started. However, after S.H.I.E.L.D. collapsed in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, many of its secrets may have ended up on the black market, possibly including the Zodiac vial.
The ‘Agent Carter’ short was historic in its own right. It marked the first time a Marvel Studios film centered on a female protagonist. Its success led to the ‘Agent Carter’ TV series, which ran for 2 seasons on ABC. The short also ends with a nod to S.H.I.E.L.D., the organization that the new ‘Zodiac’ logo seems to reference.

Whether Marvel intentionally laid the groundwork for ‘Zodiac’ remains unclear. The studio has kept plot details tightly under wraps, describing the series only as a spy thriller. Still, the connection is hard to ignore. With S.H.I.E.L.D. imagery in the logo and a mysterious Zodiac mission already part of MCU history, fans have plenty of reasons to believe the series could pull from Peggy’s past.
Do you think Marvel’s ‘Zodiac’ series will connect to the mystery from the ‘Agent Carter’ One-Shot?
