Mary J. Blige (55) Reveals Pop Star Told Her To Change Hair and Mocked Her Singing
Mary J. Blige recently opened up about a painful encounter from early in her career that left her feeling completely crushed by one of her musical idols. While appearing on the R&B Money podcast, the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul recalled the moment she finally crossed paths with an artist she deeply admired, only for the experience to turn into a harsh critique of her talent and appearance.
The legendary singer, who first rose to fame in 1992 with her debut album What’s the 411?, shared that the pop star gave her unsolicited advice that felt unnecessarily cruel. According to Mary, the unnamed icon took issue with her signature look and her vocal performance during their brief meeting.
“And this person goes, ‘You really should dye your hair and your roots the same colour as your hair. And you really should learn to sing on key,” Mary told podcast host Tank. She admitted that the comments left her speechless and questioning her own abilities, as she was still a young artist trying to find her footing in the industry.
Although she refused to name the person responsible for the snub, fans have spent years speculating about the identity of the mysterious critic. Many have pointed to Chaka Khan as a likely candidate, given that the funk legend has been vocal about Mary’s 1992 cover of her classic song “Sweet Thing” in the past.
In resurfaced interviews, Chaka famously mentioned that she initially felt Mary’s vocals on the track were flat, even joking that she asked the singer what time of day she recorded the song because of the performance.
Despite the past friction, Mary J. Blige and Chaka Khan eventually moved past the criticism and even collaborated on music together in later years. Chaka explained that their relationship reached a point where they could be honest with each other, describing the early shade as a moment of tough love between artists.
For Mary, however, the sting of that initial meeting remained a vivid memory of how difficult it can be to meet the people who inspired your own journey. As of March, Mary J. Blige is showing no signs of slowing down as she continues to expand her massive entertainment empire.
She recently released her latest single, “More Than a Lover,” in February, which has already been praised by fans for its soulful, “soft era” vibe. This track follows the success of her 2024 album Gratitude and serves as a perfect introduction to her next major career milestone.
The singer is currently preparing for her highly anticipated first-ever Las Vegas residency, titled “My Life, My Story,” which is set to begin at Dolby Live at Park MGM in May. The residency is expected to be a theatrical journey through her legendary career, featuring both her greatest hits and newer material.
On the film and television front, Mary recently extended her successful partnership with Lifetime by signing a new three-picture deal. The first film under this agreement, Mary J. Blige Presents: Be Happy, premiered on February 7 and marked the directorial debut of Academy Award nominee Gabourey Sidibe.
Between her wine brand, Sun Goddess, and her ongoing musical and cinematic contributions, she continues to solidify her status as a versatile and resilient force in Hollywood. Her ability to turn past heartbreaks and industry snubs into a multi-decade legacy is why she remains an unmatched voice in R&B culture.
