Matt Damon Reveals The Sacrifice Behind His Wild ‘Odyssey’ Transformation
Hollywood actors have long turned their bodies into tools for storytelling, reshaping themselves to disappear into characters that demand more than just a good performance. Christopher Nolan’s mythological epics are known for pushing that commitment even further, and his latest project asked one of his most trusted collaborators to do exactly that.
Matt Damon appeared nearly unrecognizable playing the legendary Greek hero Odysseus in Nolan’s mythological epic ‘The Odyssey,’ which dominated the global box office after its July 17 release with a roughly 264 million dollar opening weekend, the biggest debut of the director’s career. The film marks Damon’s third collaboration with Nolan following ‘Interstellar’ and ‘Oppenheimer,’ and it also features Tom Holland as Telemachus, Robert Pattinson as Antinous and Zendaya as Athena, alongside Anne Hathaway, Elliot Page, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron.
The transformation itself became a story of its own once Damon started explaining what it actually cost him. Speaking about the process, he admitted, “I had to give up beer. That was tough.”
It turns out that sacrifice was just one piece of a much bigger overhaul. Damon explained that he typically walks around between 185 and 200 pounds, but he brought himself down to 167 pounds for the role after working with his doctor to cut gluten from his diet entirely. That number matched his high school weight, a level of leanness he said he hadn’t touched in decades. Nolan reportedly told Damon he wanted Odysseus to look lean and strong like a veteran of the Trojan War, someone who could handle himself physically but still wouldn’t turn down a meal when one was offered.
The physical prep didn’t stop at the scale. Damon also grew out a real beard for an entire year to fully embody the weathered, war worn look Nolan envisioned for the character. Between the diet, the training and the facial hair commitment, the actor essentially rebuilt his day to day life around a role that clearly consumed him for months.
This isn’t the first time Damon has pushed his body to extremes for a part, and he’s been candid about the toll it once took on him. For the 1996 war drama ‘Courage Under Fire,’ Damon lost between 40 and 50 pounds in about 100 days, and a doctor later told him the extreme drop could have permanently shrunk his heart. The actor has since vowed not to subject himself to that kind of dangerous weight fluctuation again, which makes his more measured, gluten-free approach for ‘The Odyssey’ look like a lesson learned rather than a repeat performance.
Given how much buzz the film’s box office numbers and Damon’s transformation have already generated, it’s clear fans are just as invested in the man behind Odysseus as they are in the epic itself. Would you have given up beer for six months if it meant stepping into a role this massive?
