Matt Johnson Eyed for ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Movie

Magic: The Gathering is one of the most popular and beloved card games of all times. Debuting in 1993, Magic: The Gathering has become a global hit, with players loving the game and the fantasy world it gave birth to.

Of course, in a time when anything and everything is getting a cinematic adaptation, the time has come for a Magic: The Gathering plot to also become the central plot of a movie adaptation.

And while the project is still in very early phases of development, there is a major rumor we’d like to share with you!

As you might know, there have been several attempts to make a movie based on the Magic: The Gathering franchise, but each of these attempts failed. Recently, in February 2025, a new plan was made and it seems that this one could actually come to life.

Namely, according to the most recent rumor, the movie is eyeing Matt Johnson to direct the upcoming movie, which is somewhat surprising, but it could be a good thing for the potential movie.

Johnson is best known for his BlackBerry movie, and while he has acted more than he did directorial work, there is a chance that his specific vision could bring something interesting to the world of Magic, which is why we’re not too skeptical at this point.
