Matthew McConaughey Says It’s Time Anthony Hopkins Was Crowned PEOPLE’s “Sexiest Man Alive”
On Sunday, McConaughey posted a series of photos on Instagram from the 2025 Joy Awards in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In his post, he officially nominated Anthony Hopkins for the title of PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive.
One of the photos showed McConaughey and Hopkins posing together, both dressed in sharp black suits for the event. The 87-year-old Hopkins had his arm around McConaughey’s shoulder while the ‘Sing 2’ actor pointed at him with a big smile on his face.
The post also featured a selfie of McConaughey with Morgan Freeman, along with a candid moment of Martin Lawrence adjusting McConaughey’s bowtie.
This reunion was a special one, as McConaughey, Hopkins, and Freeman all starred together in Steven Spielberg’s 1997 film ‘Amistad.’
In his caption, McConaughey wrote: “1. It’s past time this Sir is People’s Sexiest Man Alive / 2. 1st class legend mensch / 3. I mean, who else you want straightening your tie before you hit the stage?”
Matthew McConaughey’s strong endorsement for his friend Anthony Hopkins comes almost 20 years after he himself was named PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2005.
Reflecting on the honor, McConaughey shared his thoughts in a 2024 interview with PEOPLE. He explained, “People tell me, ‘You’re no longer the Sexiest Man Alive, McConaughey,’ for the last 19 years, every time someone else has been crowned. And I say, ‘Well, I’m still alive. Come on!‘”
He continued with a lighthearted joke, saying, “If you’re named it and you’re still alive, you’re still Sexiest Man Alive. That was my joke going forward with everything.“
