Matthew McConaughey said that he might return to one of his most famous TV roles. The actor is open to reprising Rust Cohle in HBO’s hit series “True Detective,” the show that helped boost his career in the early 2010s.

McConaughey shared his excitement for the upcoming fifth season, especially because his friend Nicolas Cage is expected to take the lead.

“He’s a great actor, and I’d like to see him in that world,” he said.

When asked about returning as Rust Cohle, McConaughey didn’t rule it out. “We nailed that first season. But if it’s a script like that first one, with that fire and originality, I’d do it. And you talk about monologues. Well, Rust Cohle had a monologue. He talked about everything that was inside him, and he didn’t care if you were listening or not. There’s freedom in that,” he explained.

The first season of “True Detective” earned widespread praise for its writing, acting, cinematography, and direction. Season two had mixed reviews but still performed well with audiences. Season three was well-received, although fewer people tuned in.

The fourth season, titled “Night Country,” became the show’s most-watched season and received critical acclaim along with the most Emmy nominations for the series.

HBO is moving forward with season five, with showrunner López returning. Production is set to start in 2025, with the new season expected to air in 2027.

Reports say the season will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York, and Nicolas Cage is in talks to star. However, it’s not yet confirmed if Cage will finalize the role. The network has previously seen delays with casting, as in season four with Jodie Foster.

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, said, “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”
