Maya Boyd Visits Kenya To Prepare for Her Storm Role in Marvel’s X-Men

Marvel’s mutant era is still a couple of years away, but its new Storm is already doing her homework. Maya Boyd, the Broadway star cast as Ororo Munroe in the upcoming ‘X-Men‘ movie, has been sharing glimpses of her preparation online. Fans have noticed, and a new trip is now drawing plenty of attention.

Boyd’s casting was confirmed during Marvel Studios’ presentation at D23, and the news came as a surprise. Rather than picking an established name, the studio chose the 23-year-old performer, best known for playing Juliet in ‘& Juliet’. She reportedly marked the moment by adding 3 lightning bolt emojis to her Instagram bio, an apparent nod to Storm’s weather-controlling powers.

Her research has been visible ever since. In early September, she posted an Instagram Story showing an armful of Storm comics, which fans and outlets took as a sign that she is serious about the role. Now the preparation has gone international.

Cosmic Marvel reported on X that Boyd is currently in Kenya, adding that she will play Storm in the MCU. The post went out on September 19 and includes a screenshot from Boyd’s Instagram Story showing colorful, hand-painted banners at a busy market. It quickly became one of the day’s trending entertainment stories, with fans praising the boots-on-the-ground approach.

The destination is anything but random. In the comics, Storm’s mother was a tribal princess from Kenya, and her father was a Black-American photojournalist. Ororo was raised in Harlem and later in Cairo, before becoming an orphan and learning to survive as a young pickpocket.

Fan site X-Men Films noted that Storm’s mother N’Daré was born in a remote village in the Great Rift Valley. The site added that Storm was hailed as a goddess in a Kenyan village before she eventually met Professor Charles Xavier. Whether the movie explores that history remains unclear, though fans are hoping for flashbacks.

That context makes Boyd’s trip a fitting piece of research. Spending time in the country tied to the character’s roots is a very different kind of preparation from reading comics alone. It suggests she is looking for a deeper connection to the material.

The untitled ‘X-Men’ film is directed by Jake Schreier, who also made ‘Thunderbolts’. It is currently scheduled for May 5, 2028, and it marks the mutants’ official entry into the MCU. Boyd follows Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp, who both played Storm in 20th Century Fox’s earlier film series.

Marvel hasn’t yet revealed what the movie’s story will cover or how Storm will look on screen. Some fans have speculated that Boyd and other mutants could appear earlier, in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2027, though that remains unconfirmed. Related X stories about a star-studded cast for the film have also been trending, showing how much excitement surrounds the project.

Social media reaction to Boyd has been overwhelmingly warm. When she shared a 5-photo carousel earlier this month, many followers replied with lightning bolt and thunderstorm emojis, and some simply called her Storm. That kind of early affection is rare for a new franchise lead.

For an actress making her big-screen debut, that goodwill is a strong start. With her theater background and hands-on approach, Boyd appears determined to earn it. Fans now have plenty of time to imagine how her version of the character will look.
