McDonald’s Just Gave Hello Kitty and Friends a Godzilla Makeover
McDonald’s has spent the past couple of years leaning hard into pop culture crossovers for its Happy Meal lineup, chasing viral moments the same way its adult-focused meals have with franchises like ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ and the FIFA World Cup. That strategy has increasingly meant pairing wildly different fandoms together in ways that shouldn’t work on paper but somehow do.
The chain’s latest attempt at that formula may be its most unexpected pairing yet. Earlier this month, McDonald’s teased the collaboration with a short Instagram clip showing Hello Kitty decked out in a monster costume, complete with a fierce reptilian head and tail, captioned simply “cute meets kaiju.”
That tease has now fully paid off. The Hello Kitty & Friends x Godzilla Happy Meal is available at participating McDonald’s locations nationwide, combining Sanrio’s beloved character lineup with monsters pulled directly from the Godzilla film franchise, giving fans eight exclusive collectible toys to chase down.
Each toy in the collection reimagines a familiar Sanrio character as a specific Godzilla franchise monster. Hello Kitty herself takes on the role of Godzilla, while Chococat becomes SpaceGodzilla, Kuromi embodies Mechagodzilla, and Keroppi represents King Ghidorah. Badtz-Maru channels Rodan, My Melody portrays Mothra, Cinnamoroll stands in for Destoroyah, and Pompompurin rounds out the set as Gigan.
That kind of character-by-character mashup gives the collection real appeal for collectors on both sides of the crossover, whether someone’s drawn in by Sanrio’s cast of characters or by decades of Godzilla lore. Each toy comes bundled with a choice of hamburger or McNuggets as part of the standard Happy Meal format.
This isn’t McDonald’s first swing at pairing Sanrio characters with an unexpected franchise, and it fits into a broader pattern of collaborations rooted in East Asian pop culture. Earlier this year, the chain released a BT21 Happy Meal tied to BTS, following a 2025 partnership that put TinyTAN toys inspired by each of the group’s seven members into Happy Meal boxes. McDonald’s has also brought Japanese-inspired promotions to U.S. menus before, including a 2025 collaboration with ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ that recreated one of McDonald’s Japan’s dipping sauces for American restaurants.
That track record suggests the Hello Kitty x Godzilla pairing isn’t a one-off novelty, but part of a deliberate strategy to keep tapping into passionate global fandoms for limited-time promotions. Given how enthusiastically fans have responded to prior collaborations like the ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ meal earlier this year, McDonald’s appears confident that unconventional character mashups can still generate real buzz.
McDonald’s has not announced a specific end date for the Hello Kitty & Friends x Godzilla Happy Meal, though the company has been clear that supplies are limited and availability will vary by location. For collectors hoping to track down all eight toys, that uncertainty means checking in sooner rather than later at participating restaurants.
Whether the appeal comes from nostalgia for Sanrio’s decades-long run of characters or a genuine love for Godzilla’s kaiju mythology, McDonald’s latest Happy Meal offers a genuinely strange but strikingly well-executed bridge between two very different corners of pop culture.
