Megan Fox Reportedly Locks In Her Return For ‘Jennifer’s Body 2’
‘Jennifer’s Body’ has spent the better part of two decades transforming from a box office disappointment into one of horror’s most beloved cult classics. The film starred Megan Fox as a possessed cheerleader who kills and eats her male classmates, and while its 2009 release was met with weak numbers, it has since become a fixture of streaming platforms and social media discourse. That renewed appreciation has fueled years of fan speculation about whether the story would ever continue.
That speculation started gaining real traction earlier this year. Diablo Cody, who wrote the original film, confirmed during a panel at the Storytelling 360 event in Los Angeles that she was actively writing a screenplay for a sequel. Around the same time, Dread Central reported that both Fox and her co-star Amanda Seyfried were interested in reprising their roles.
Now the project appears to be moving from interest to reality. Dread Central has exclusively confirmed that Karyn Kusama is returning to direct ‘Jennifer’s Body 2’ from Diablo Cody’s screenplay, with Megan Fox also confirmed to be back, and filming is expected to begin this October in Vancouver. The outlet also reports that the follow-up is being produced by Disney, which now owns the rights to the original film after its 20th Century Fox distribution. That timeline lines up with earlier reporting from Production Weekly, which listed the sequel as set to begin shooting this fall.
Kusama had been dropping hints about the project for months before this latest update. Speaking to Deadline last October, the director confirmed Cody’s involvement and teased what little she knew of the plot, saying, “I know some of the bones of it, so I’m not going to give anything away, but it sounds fun and crazy like the first film.”
Seyfried has been equally forthcoming, though her own participation is not yet officially locked in. During a conversation with Variety, she told co-star Adam Brody, “We’re making another one,” before adding that she would not sign on without Fox by her side.
The original ‘Jennifer’s Body’ followed a high school cheerleader who becomes possessed by a demon after a rock band performs a botched ritual sacrifice, turning her into a flesh eating predator that her best friend must eventually stop. The film opened in North America with roughly 6.8 million dollars and went on to earn about 31.6 million dollars worldwide, a soft debut for a movie starring one of the era’s biggest rising stars. Its reviews were mixed at the time, sitting around 47 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but the movie has since undergone a significant critical reassessment praised for its commentary on female friendship and its subversion of horror tropes.
Cody has spoken warmly about what made the original resonate with her creatively. In an earlier conversation with Phantasmag, she reflected that she felt the most like herself as an artist when she wrote ‘Jennifer’s Body.’
With Fox reportedly confirmed, Kusama back behind the camera, and Cody finishing the script, ‘Jennifer’s Body 2’ suddenly feels closer than fans have dared to hope in years. Now that Jennifer Check may be rising again this October, what do you want to see from her long awaited return to Devil’s Kettle?
