Meghan Markle is returning to acting after an eight-year break. The Duchess of Sussex, 44, was spotted on November 5 filming for the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios comedy Close Personal Friends in Pasadena, California.

In the film, Meghan will play herself alongside stars Brie Larson, Lily Collins, Jack Quaid, and Henry Golding. The Sun was the first to report the news.

An insider told PEOPLE, “Meghan was on the set today. She has a small part. She seemed very relaxed and happy. She introduced herself to everyone and was very sweet and down-to-earth.”

This role is Meghan’s first acting project since leaving the TV show Suits in 2017, following her engagement to Prince Harry. A studio source told The Sun, “This is a massive moment for Meghan and signifies a return to doing what she truly loves. She has been swamped with offers but this one felt right.”

The source added, “It is Meghan’s way of gently putting her toe back in the water and seeing how she enjoys being back on set. Everyone involved is super-excited, and have been sworn to secrecy about her involvement.”

Close Personal Friends is directed by Jason Orley and written by Isaac Aptaker. The story follows a couple who have an awkward encounter with a celebrity couple. The film also features Melissa Villaseñor, Natasia Demetriou, Anna Konkle, Jack Shalloo, Patti Harrison, and Dustin Demri-Burns.

Filming began on September 30, in both London and Los Angeles. According to sources, Prince Harry is supportive of Meghan’s return to acting, with one insider saying, “Prince Harry is, of course, really supportive and quite simply wants Meghan to do whatever brings her joy.”
