Mel Gibson, 69, and Rosalind Ross, 35, Call It Quits After Nearly a Decade: “It’s Sad To End This Chapter in our Lives”

The actor and director, 69, and the screenwriter, 35, shared a joint statement with PEOPLE saying, “Although it’s sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible.”

The couple quietly separated about a year ago but remain committed to co-parenting their 8-year-old son, Lars.

Gibson is no stranger to a large family. In addition to Lars, he has eight older children. He shares daughter Hannah and six adult sons, Christian, Edward, William, Louis, Milo, and Thomas, with ex-wife Robyn Moore. He also has a 16-year-old daughter, Lucia, with songwriter Oksana Grigorieva, from whom he split in 2010.

In January 2025, Gibson and Ross faced another challenge when they lost their Malibu home in the Los Angeles wildfires.

Gibson was away working at the time, but his family and their animals were safely evacuated. Reflecting on the event, Gibson at the time said, “The good news is that those in my family and those I love are all well, and we’re all happy and healthy and out of harm’s way, that’s all I can care about, really.”

Gibson is currently working on The Resurrection of the Christ, a follow-up to his 2004 biblical drama The Passion of the Christ. The new film will be released in two parts, with the first scheduled for Good Friday, March 26, 2027.

Gibson’s personal life has been widely reported over the years. He met his first wife, Robyn Moore, in 1977 shortly after filming Mad Max in Australia. They married in 1980 and had seven children together. After 26 years of marriage, the couple separated in 2006, and their divorce was finalized in 2011 with a reported settlement of over $400 million.

In 2010, Gibson had a brief relationship with Oksana Grigorieva, resulting in the birth of their daughter Lucia. Their relationship ended amid public legal disputes, including allegations of domestic violence, a restraining order, and a misdemeanor battery charge, which Gibson resolved through a no-contest plea while maintaining his innocence.

Gibson began dating Rosalind Ross, a former champion equestrian vaulter and writer, in 2014. Ross gave birth to their son in 2017. Their relationship lasted nine years before the couple decided to separate, focusing on co-parenting their child.
