Michael Bay Is Reportedly Returning to ‘Transformers’ as Steven Spielberg Takes Creative Control
Few filmmakers are as closely tied to a franchise as Michael Bay is to ‘Transformers’. Bay directed the first 5 live-action films, from the 2007 original through 2017’s ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’, and together they earned a combined $4.38 billion worldwide.
Since Bay stepped away, the franchise has struggled to find its footing. 2023’s ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ and 2024’s animated ‘Transformers: One’ both underwhelmed at the box office, leaving Paramount searching for a way to reinvigorate one of its biggest properties.
Now the studio appears to be turning back to the man who started it all. According to an exclusive report from Page Six, Bay is in final talks to direct the eighth ‘Transformers’ movie for David Ellison’s newly merged Skydance.
The deal isn’t quite finished yet. Page Six reported that final cut remains a sticking point in negotiations, with Bay expected to proceed if he is guaranteed that control. Other outlets have characterized the talks differently. Deadline described the negotiations as early, reporting that Bay read the script, met with Spielberg earlier this week, and is now on board.
Either way, Bay appears to be Paramount’s first choice. He had been open to returning over the years, and the timing finally seems right. The project also marks a bigger role for Steven Spielberg. According to Deadline, Paramount has tapped the legendary director to focus on all creative aspects of the new film alongside longtime franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Spielberg has remained an executive producer throughout the franchise’s history and produced the first 2 live-action films. He was also the one who originally chose Bay to direct the 2007 ‘Transformers’.

The renewed push came after the Skydance merger. Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg reportedly made it a priority to breathe new life into the franchise, meeting with Spielberg to discuss its future.
Jason Fuchs, whose credits include ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ and ‘Argylle’, has written the script. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film is set in the modern day. The new movie is said to honor the spirit of the early ‘Transformers’ films. There is no cast yet, though TheWrap has learned that Shia LaBeouf is not returning.
That news puts to rest earlier rumors. Reports earlier this year had claimed Bay was scouting locations in Africa for a new ‘Transformers’ movie, with speculation that LaBeouf could return as Sam Witwicky.

‘Transformers 8’ is among the first major projects announced since the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger closed. Paramount had previously teased “More Transformers” at CinemaCon in April without offering further details.
For Bay, the return would mark his sixth film in the franchise. His most recent movie, 2022’s ‘Ambulance’, underperformed at the box office, making this a potential comeback for the director as well. The news quickly lit up social media. Some fans are thrilled to see Bay return to the franchise he defined, while others worry about a return to the excess of the later sequels.
With Spielberg guiding the creative direction and Bay potentially back behind the camera, the reunion of the original team could be exactly the reset the franchise needs. Now fans will wait to see if the final deal comes together.
