Director Michael Mann is considering using artificial intelligence in his long-awaited sequel, Heat 2. In a recent interview, Mann, 81, said AI could help portray both younger and older versions of characters, as the story spans multiple time periods.

Aging and de-aging may be very important, Mann explained. “The story stretches across different time periods, and I want the transitions to feel authentic. If AI can help achieve that without losing the emotional truth of the performances, it’s worth exploring.”

The announcement caught the attention of fans eager for updates on the sequel to the 1995 crime classic. Heat 2 will explore both the events before and after the original film, which starred Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer. The film’s dual timelines present challenges for traditional makeup and visual effects, making AI a potentially useful tool.

Mann stressed that AI will only be used to support the story, not as a gimmick. “I’ve always been driven by realism and emotion. If AI helps enhance that — while respecting the integrity of the actors — then it’s another brush in the artist’s toolkit,” he said.

The project is based on Mann’s 2022 novel co-written with Meg Gardiner and continues the tense world of cops and criminals that made the original Heat a classic. Production details remain limited, but Mann’s comments suggest the film is moving forward and exploring new technology to bring its ambitious vision to life.

Using AI for de-aging and time jumps could mark a significant step for Hollywood storytelling, blending advanced technology with traditional filmmaking techniques.
