Michael Sarnoski Just Confirmed the ‘Death Stranding’ Movie Is Finally Entering Its Next Big Phase

Hideo Kojima’s ‘Death Stranding’ has spent years teasing the idea of a live-action adaptation, ever since A24 and Kojima Productions first confirmed the project was in the works. For a game built around isolation, connection, and a fractured, post-apocalyptic America, translating that atmosphere to film was always going to be a slow, deliberate process.

Much of that patience has paid off in how the creative direction has taken shape. Rather than a straight retelling of the game’s plot, director Michael Sarnoski has been building an original story set within Kojima’s universe, one that introduces new characters while still weaving in some overlapping faces fans of the games will recognize. Kojima himself has reportedly given Sarnoski wide creative freedom to explore that world on his own terms.

Now that groundwork is finally translating into concrete movement. Sarnoski has confirmed that pre-production on the film is beginning soon, with the team set to head out on a location scout within the next month to find the right settings for the story.

That update builds on comments Sarnoski made earlier this year, when he revealed he’d completed a second draft of the script and expressed hope of shooting the film in Iceland and Northern Ireland. Those locations would make sense visually, given the desolate, rugged landscapes that defined so much of the original game’s atmosphere.

No casting announcements have been made yet, so it remains unclear whether any of the game’s voice cast will factor into the live-action version. That roster includes Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, and Margaret Qualley, all of whom lent their likenesses and performances to the original 2019 release and its sequel.

Sarnoski isn’t exactly new to high-stakes adaptations or ambitious original storytelling. His debut feature ‘Pig’ earned widespread critical acclaim, and he followed it up with ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ which brought in well over $250 million at the box office.

His most recent film, ‘The Death of Robin Hood,’ also released through A24 this year, offers a darker reimagining of the legendary outlaw with Hugh Jackman in the lead role. While that film’s box office performance was modest compared to his previous outing, it further cemented Sarnoski’s reputation as a filmmaker A24 trusts with distinctive, character-driven material, exactly the sensibility he’s bringing into the ‘Death Stranding’ adaptation.

With location scouting now on the horizon, casting decisions likely represent one of the next major milestones for fans to watch for. Given how tightly the production has kept details under wraps so far, any news on who might step into Sam Porter Bridges’ shoes, or whether Reedus himself returns in some capacity, is bound to generate significant buzz.

It’s worth remembering just how large the built-in audience for this adaptation already is. The original ‘Death Stranding’ captured the imaginations of more than 19 million players worldwide, and its 2019 release remains one of the more divisive yet beloved entries in Kojima’s genre-defying career, giving this film a passionate fanbase that’s been waiting a long time for concrete updates.

For now, the confirmation that pre-production is officially underway marks real forward motion after years of incremental script updates and vague timelines. Whether the finished film manages to capture the strange, melancholy tone that made the games so memorable will likely depend heavily on how faithfully Sarnoski’s original story channels that same emotional core.
