Michelle Obama, 62, Reveals She Has 10 Bold New Piercings That She Got in One Sitting

Michelle Obama is showing off a bold new look at 62. On the February 11 episode of her IMO podcast with her brother Craig Robinson, the former first lady revealed she recently got 10 new ear piercings in a single visit.

The siblings joked around about the new jewelry during the episode. Robinson teased her, saying, “What I’ve learned is that you tried to get your ears pierced and thought I didn’t notice. And I see you got all these new piercings in your ear.” Michelle replied with a laugh, “I don’t think you noticed.”

She explained that she had always thought about getting more piercings but never made the time. “I had a second [piercing] hole that I had got before I had kids. But then I just got lazy and stopped putting an earring in it,” she said. Michelle added that seeing younger people embrace multiple piercings inspired her to try it herself.

“There’s just more beautiful adornment. You see more of a cluster, a constellation, with twinkles,” she said, describing the look she wanted.

At first, Michelle planned to get just a few piercings, but she ended up asking the piercer to add more during the appointment. “So in one sitting, I’ve got 10 piercings,” she said. Robinson jokingly responded, “Ouch.” Michelle reassured him, “[It] wasn’t bad at all.”

The former first lady also shared a funny story about how long it took her husband, Barack Obama, to notice the new piercings. “Barack, [it] took him a couple of days. He was like, ‘You haven’t had your hair up, you’ve had your hair down.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know. I like sleep with you every night, dude, you know?’” Robinson added, “Don’t tell him that I noticed before him,” and Michelle admitted, “I think I did.”

Michelle has been embracing more freedom with her style since leaving the White House. In November, she told PEOPLE about her coffee-table book, The Look, and how she now feels free to experiment with hairstyles and jewelry. “Braids allow me to get them done, and then that’s one less thing that I have to think about. When I’m out of the public eye, I am swimming, I am playing tennis, and braids represent that kind of freedom for me,” she said.

She also reflected on why she didn’t wear certain styles while in office. “I wasn’t sure whether the country was ready for it,” she said of her decision not to wear braids during her husband’s presidency. “The Crown Act hadn’t been passed yet, and just like fashion, I didn’t want my hair to become a distraction.”

Michelle Obama’s new piercings are part of her personal style evolution. She seems to be enjoying the freedom to express herself while staying true to her taste and identity.
