Michelle Yeoh’s ‘Blade Runner’ Steps Into a World Where Humans Lost the War in New Fall TV Preview Look

Prestige science fiction has a long tradition of returning to well-worn universes decades after their original stories concluded, betting that beloved world-building can support entirely new characters and conflicts. Few franchises carry as much weight in that tradition as “Blade Runner,” a series whose neon-soaked vision of dystopian Los Angeles has influenced genre filmmaking for over four decades.

Prime Video has spent months building anticipation for its television continuation of that legacy, and Entertainment Weekly’s Fall TV Preview has now delivered a fresh look at the series just weeks ahead of its premiere. The new image arrives alongside previous glimpses shared back in July, continuing to build out the show’s post-uprising vision of a world turned upside down.

Entertainment Weekly has released a new image from Prime Video’s “Blade Runner 2099,” showing Michelle Yeoh in character as replicant Blade Runner Olwen, gun drawn amid a hazy, sunlit interior. The series is set 50 years after the events of “Blade Runner 2049” and depicts a Los Angeles reshaped by a replicant uprising in which humans lost.

Showrunner Silka Luisa laid out that premise when the project was first previewed earlier this summer. “There’s been a replicant uprising that feels like it’s been bubbling up,” Luisa told Entertainment Weekly. “And between 2049 and 2099, that’s happened. So the war has happened, and the humans have lost. Our worst fears imagined. The replicants are now the power brokers of the city, and humans are the second-class citizens.”

Yeoh’s character, Olwen, is a replicant nearing the end of her programmed life cycle, tasked with hunting down a group of missing rogue replicants. According to Luisa, replicants know the exact day they’re scheduled to die, giving Olwen’s mission an inherent urgency as she races against her own mortality.

She’s paired with Hunter Schafer’s Cora, a human fugitive who has spent her life evading Blade Runners and now finds herself forced to pose as a replicant to survive in this new world order. That inversion, a human hiding among the very beings she was once trained to fear, gives the series a distinct twist on the franchise’s long-standing themes of identity and what separates human from machine.

Luisa has been clear that the series won’t lean on returning faces from previous films. “We are taking place so much in the future that obviously none of the same characters are around,” she explained, positioning “Blade Runner 2099” as a genuine continuation of the franchise’s ideas rather than a nostalgia-driven sequel. The cast also includes Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, and Matthew Needham in recurring guest roles.

Filming for the series wrapped in Prague in late 2024, with production also taking place in Barcelona, and the show carries an extensive pedigree behind the camera, with Ridley Scott among its executive producers alongside creator Luisa.

“Blade Runner 2099” is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on November 25, giving fans just a couple of months to prepare for the franchise’s first live-action television series. With Entertainment Weekly’s new Fall TV Preview image offering another glimpse of Yeoh’s world-weary Olwen ahead of launch, anticipation for how this replicant-dominated Los Angeles will look on screen continues to build.
