Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ Is Scoring Big With Viewers, and the Episode Ratings Prove It
Mike Flanagan has built a reputation as one of modern horror’s most reliable storytellers. From ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ to ‘Midnight Mass’ and ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’, his series have blended terror with deep emotional storytelling.
His latest project brings him back to Stephen King, this time adapting the author’s debut novel. ‘Carrie’, an 8-episode limited series for Prime Video, arrived on October 7 in more than 240 countries and territories, with King serving as an executive producer.
Now the series is earning strong praise from audiences. Episode ratings shared by The Cinéprism on X show every installment scoring 8.0 or higher, with fans calling it one of the best horror shows of the year.
According to the breakdown, the premiere episode opened with an 8.1, followed by three straight episodes rated 8.0. The series then climbed steadily, with Episode 5 reaching 8.2. Episodes 6 and 7 hit the season’s high point at 8.5 each. The finale closed things out at 8.2, rounding out a remarkably consistent run.

That consistency is rare for a horror series, where pacing can often dip in the middle stretch. Fans online have pointed to the second half as the moment the show truly takes off.
The audience praise mirrors a strong critical response. The series holds an 85% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from more than 70 reviews, with the critical consensus praising Flanagan for expanding the story with more compassion and a modern update.
RogerEbert.com described it as visceral, searing, and provocative, calling it not the scariest version of ‘Carrie’ but the most layered. Awards Radar called it close to perfect, though the reviewer felt the final minutes of the finale were its only misstep.

Tom’s Guide praised the series as a bold new take on King’s classic, highlighting how Flanagan uses the camera to put viewers inside Carrie’s head. Some critics, however, felt the story was stretched too thin or that modern updates softened the original’s horror.
Flanagan’s version moves the story’s teenage pressures firmly into 2026, where cruelty can spread far beyond a single high school. The series also mirrors the novel’s framework, opening with 911 calls from prom night before shifting into a documentary with survivors piecing together what happened.
Episode titles like “First Period”, “Foreign Language”, “Romantic Literature” and “AP Physics” lean into the school setting. Flanagan directed every episode himself. Summer H. Howell leads the series as Carrie White, chosen after more than 1,000 actors auditioned for the role. Critics have praised her for capturing Carrie’s innocence while delivering when the horror hits.

Samantha Sloyan plays Carrie’s mother, Margaret, while Siena Agudong stands out as Sue Snell. Alison Thornton, Arthur Conti, Joel Oulette, Matthew Lillard, Amber Midthunder and Josie Totah also star, alongside Flanagan regulars Kate Siegel and Rahul Kohli.
The series marks Flanagan’s first project under his deal with Amazon, produced with longtime collaborator Trevor Macy. Prime Video gave it a series order in April 2025. With strong ratings and critical acclaim, ‘Carrie’ looks set to join the ranks of Flanagan’s most celebrated work. For horror fans, it may be the perfect binge for spooky season.
