Miley Cyrus Was Originally Set to Reprise Her Role in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ But Had to Be Recast—Here’s Why

Despite some Phase 4 and Phase 5 MCU movies falling flat, the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise consistently delivers solid results. The latest installment has been praised by many fans as the best of the series.

The third film delves into the High Evolutionary and Rocket’s tragic backstory, providing an emotional farewell to the original team. As the old Guardians disband, new members step in under Rocket Raccoon’s leadership.

Many of the cast members from previous Guardians of the Galaxy films returned for the latest installment, including Miley Cyrus, who was originally set to voice Mainframe. Mainframe, an artificial intelligence who founded the Mainframe Ravager Clan and is a member of both Stakar Ogord’s Team and the United Ravagers, appears in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but with a different voice actor.

Director James Gunn addressed the recasting when the film was released in 2023. He explained that Miley Cyrus was unavailable, suggesting that efforts were made to include her, but it ultimately didn’t work out. Gunn confirmed that the Mainframe character in Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 is indeed the same.

In the end, Tara Strong, known for her role as Miss Minutes in Loki, voiced Mainframe.
