‘Mindhunter’ Comeback Closer Than Ever? Star Teases Shocking New Plan With David Fincher

It looks like there might still be hope for fans of Mindhunter. After years of silence, one of the stars of the show, Holt McCallany, has brought some new energy into the idea of a return. McCallany, who plays Bill Tench in the series, recently shared that he had a meeting with the show’s director and producer, David Fincher.
According to McCallany, there’s a chance Mindhunter could come back, not as a full season, but maybe as three two-hour movies.
In an interview with ComicBookResources, McCallany opened up about what was said during that meeting. He didn’t make any promises, but he did say that there are writers currently working on ideas. He made it clear that Fincher is very careful about what he chooses to work on, and he has to be fully happy with the material before moving forward.
“So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance. I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”
McCallany also mentioned that timing is a big issue. Not just for Fincher, but also for the actors. Jonathan Groff, who plays Holden Ford on the show, just won a Tony Award in 2024, so getting everyone back together might not be easy.
“And I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all. I would love it if it were to return. I think, like I said, you know, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had that meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align. The good news is that we’re at Netflix with The Waterfront, and those movies would also be for Netflix. So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that’s a big question mark.”
Since 2019, fans have been waiting to see if Mindhunter would ever return. Fincher, in the meantime, has been busy with other films. He directed two movies for Netflix and is now working on The Adventures of Cliff Booth, which is tied to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
That movie is still in pre-production, but actors like Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Elizabeth Debicki have joined the cast, so it looks like filming could start soon.
Even if everything goes well, it might still be a long wait before Mindhunter gets picked up again in any form. But this update from McCallany gives a small bit of hope.
It’s not a green light, but it’s not a dead end either. Fans will just have to keep waiting, and maybe, someday, the pieces will fall into place.
