‘Mister Miracle’ Finally Has a Release Window as Peter Safran Reveals How Far Along DC’s Animated Series Really Is
DC Studios has been quietly building one of its most intriguing projects away from the spotlight. ‘Mister Miracle’, the adult animated series adapting Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Eisner Award-winning comic, was greenlit by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios in June 2025. Since then, fans have heard very little about when they’ll actually get to see it.
King is adapting his own book as showrunner and executive producer, and he has written all 8 episodes himself. The original 12-issue run blends existential dread and domestic life with an intergalactic war between New Genesis and Darkseid’s forces on Apokolips, and King has said the series will carry huge implications for the DCU.
Now the show finally has a target. DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran revealed that ‘Mister Miracle’ is aiming for a 2028 release, and that production is much further along than many assumed. “We haven’t actually announced a date for it. We’re very advanced on it,” Safran told Collider.
Safran made clear that the team isn’t just in the early planning stages. “I mean, we’ve seen animatics of the whole season,” he said. “But I think we’ve always thought of it as ’28.” Animatics are a rough, timed version of the animation, so seeing the full season in that form means the story and structure are effectively locked. For a project that has stayed largely under wraps, that’s a promising sign.
Safran also confirmed the show’s format. Asked whether episodes would run about 30 minutes, he replied, “Yeah. I think that’s what we ended up with,” which points to a tight, 8-episode first season.

The release window follows a major casting reveal earlier this week. Safran confirmed that Josh Hutcherson will voice Scott Free, aka Mister Miracle, while Mackenzie Davis will voice Big Barda.
Hutcherson is known for ‘The Hunger Games’ and ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’, while Davis has starred in ‘Station Eleven’, ‘Blade Runner 2049’ and ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’. Fans have already pointed out that the pairing nods to the comics, where Barda famously towers over Scott.
King has been closely involved in the process, including being present for recording sessions. He has previously said he wasn’t willing to settle for anything less than perfect when it came to casting a book he loves so deeply.
The series follows Scott Free, a celebrated escape artist living what seems like a perfect life on Earth with his wife, Big Barda. That life begins to unravel as war rages between their home worlds, Apokolips and New Genesis.
Scott’s adoptive father, Darkseid, appears to have captured the Anti-Life Equation, a weapon that would give him total control of the universe. Scott may be the only one who can stop the war, but the Equation may already be affecting his mind, stirring up buried pain and threatening his marriage.
Safran described the show as incredibly emotional but also action-packed. That fits the reputation of a comic many fans consider one of DC’s best modern stories. Even before the first season arrives, Safran is open to more. “Well, because it’s about Scott and Barda and their child, I think there are a lot of places you can go with it,” he said. “There’s no reason why it couldn’t be an ongoing season series.”
‘Mister Miracle’ is the second adult animated series from Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios, following ‘Creature Commandos’, whose second season is already in production for HBO Max. Its platform hasn’t been officially announced yet, but with the season mapped out and its leads in place, the show is well on its way.
