Misty Copeland brought a graceful touch to the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday evening, marking a powerful return to the spotlight just months after her retirement from professional ballet.
The 43-year-old trailblazer stunned on the red carpet in a bespoke David Koma ensemble, which featured a sharp, structured black blazer paired with a delicate white tulle tutu detail at the waist.
She completed the look with a floor-length white skirt and over $2 million worth of diamonds from the Jared Jewelers atelier, opting for a clean, elegant aesthetic by skipping a necklace to highlight the dramatic cut of her top.

Her appearance at the Dolby Theatre served as more than just a fashion statement, as the prima ballerina took the stage for a high-profile tribute to the Oscar-nominated film Sinners.
Joining stars Miles Caton and Raphael Saadiq for a performance of the original song I Lied to You, Copeland utilized the platform to remind the global audience of the enduring intersection between dance and cinematic storytelling.
The performance was a highlight of the ceremony, showcasing the same technical precision and artistry that defined her 25-year career at the American Ballet Theatre. Copeland’s participation in the evening was particularly poignant given her recent public stance regarding the cultural value of the arts.
Only days prior, she had pushed back against controversial comments made by Best Actor nominee Timothée Chalamet, who had suggested that interest in ballet and opera was waning. During a recent panel in New York, Copeland addressed the remarks directly without naming him, noting that it is a mistake to equate mass popularity with cultural importance.

But I think that it’s important that we acknowledge that, yes, this is an art form that’s not ‘popular’ and a part of pop culture as movies are, she explained. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have enduring relevance in culture.
She went on to emphasize that even modern movie stars owe a debt to the long history of stage performance, concluding, So all of these mediums have a space, and we shouldn’t be comparing them.
Since retiring from her principal role at ABT in October 2025, Copeland has shifted her full attention toward advocacy and the mission of her foundation. The Misty Copeland Foundation aims to bridge the gap in access to high-quality dance training by providing free ballet education to children in under-resourced communities.
Through programs like BE BOLD, she continues to work toward making classical dance more diverse, equitable, and accessible for the next generation. As for the film being honored during her performance, Sinners has been the standout hit of the awards season.
