‘Modern Family’ Fans Are Losing It Over This Rare Cast Reunion, and the Timing Makes It Even Sweeter
Ensemble sitcoms have a way of leaving behind a real sense of family once the cameras stop rolling, but few shows managed to make that bond feel as genuine as this one did. Nearly six years after signing off for the last time, the cast has kept finding small ways to remind fans that the connection they built on screen never really faded once the series ended.
That connection has shown up in scattered appearances over the years, from convention panels to the occasional joint Instagram post, each one enough to send longtime viewers into a wave of nostalgia. This latest reunion, though, has landed with even more weight given exactly when it happened.
The ‘Modern Family’ cast reunited in new photos, gathering for a dinner outing on Sunday, August 31, timed to fall almost exactly on the sixth anniversary of the series finale. Sofía Vergara shared a carousel of photos on Instagram capturing the mini-reunion, writing in her caption, “With my American family!!!”
The featured photo showed Ed O’Neill, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Vergara, and ‘Modern Family’ co-creator Christopher Lloyd standing together. Additional shots from the gathering showed smaller combinations of the group, including O’Neill and Vergara together and a separate shot of Vergara alongside Bowen.
Vergara added a playful touch to the post by soundtracking it with “In the Moonlight (Do Me),” the fan-favorite song Reid Ewing’s character Dylan performed for Sarah Hyland’s Haley Dunphy back in Season 1, a small nod that longtime viewers immediately recognized.
Bowen and Ferguson each shared their own versions of the reunion on social media as well. Bowen posted alongside Ferguson with the caption “I love my fake dad… (I love my real dad too, but he wasn’t at the dinner last night),” while Ferguson kept his own message simple, writing “I love these people.”
What made this particular gathering stand out from previous reunions was O’Neill’s presence, which fans noted as a genuinely rare public appearance. Although several cast members have continued crossing paths regularly, including appearances together at Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s off-Broadway show and on Dylan Dreyer’s podcast earlier this year, O’Neill has been photographed with the group far less frequently and has taken on few acting roles since the sitcom ended.
‘Modern Family’ ran for 11 seasons on ABC from 2009 to 2020, earning 88 Emmy nominations and 22 wins over its run, including five for Outstanding Comedy Series. O’Neill played patriarch Jay Pritchett, with Bowen as Claire Dunphy, Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett, and Vergara as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, the family at the center of the show’s mockumentary-style storytelling.
Fans flooded the comments on all three posts with nostalgic reactions, with many expressing hope that the continued closeness among the cast could eventually translate into some form of official reunion project down the line. For now, though, these small glimpses of the Pritchett-Dunphy family reuniting off screen seem to be more than enough to keep the show’s legacy alive.
