‘Phases of the Moon Knight’ is a new storyline that dives into the rich history of the Moon Knight legacy, showing Marc Spector’s connection to past Fists of Khonshu.
The story mixes Marc’s modern-day quest for justice with new Moon Knights from ancient times. It uncovers long-lost secrets of the Marvel Universe tied to this ancient Moon Knight’s journey.
The latest issue reveals some hidden history about vampires. In the story ‘Blood Moon, Blood Brothers’ by Tom Waltz and others, the Moon Knight from ancient Mesopotamia is introduced. The story follows Moon Knight as he battles Varnae, the first vampire in Marvel history, who is a demon connected to the god Ba’al.
Varnae isn’t a new character in the comics. He was an ancient sorcerer from Atlantis who became the first vampire through a ritual with the Darkhold. As the creator of all vampires, he ruled over them for centuries. Later, he chose Count Dracula as his successor, manipulated him into becoming a vampire, and then took his own life. After Doctor Strange wiped out most vampires, Varnae returned and tried to reclaim his power.
Eventually, Varnae possessed Blade, triggering the global vampire conflict known as the Blood Hunt.
In ‘Phases of the Moon Knight’ #4, Varnae can be seen making a deal with Ramsin, who wanted to use the Blood Moon to gain access to the throne, which was most vulnerable during this phase of the Moon.
Varnae is ultimately defeated by Moon Knight, setting up an intriguing idea that the character was one of the very first vampire hunters — and one of the most powerful. As revealed in the latest issue, the Moon’s battle against vampires also carried over into the modern world.
What does this mean for the MCU? As you probably know, Blade has been delayed again and is no longer on Disney’s upcoming release schedule. However, Feige reassured fans that the movie is still in development with Mahershala Ali set to star as Blade.
But what if these new discoveries are brought into the MCU? Moon Knight is already part of the cinematic universe, and his live-action series explored his deep mythology with gods and monsters.
The MCU could use Moon Knight as a gateway for vampires, and when Blade is ready, bring him into the story, possibly setting up the rumored Midnight Sons project.
