More Nintendo Movies Are Coming After ‘Super Mario Bros 2’ and Live-Action Zelda Confirms Nintendo President

Nintendo’s move into movies is off to a strong start, and it looks like they’re just getting warmed up. Fans hoping to see more of their favorite video game worlds on the big screen might not have to wait too long.

During a recent Q&A session from Nintendo’s Annual General Meeting, company president Shuntaro Furukawa shared some exciting news about what’s next. The information was translated and shared publicly, giving fans a peek at Nintendo’s plans for movies based on their beloved games.

When asked if more films were on the way beyond Mario and Zelda, Furukawa said, “We released The Super Mario Bros. Movie in theaters in April 2023, and are pleased to say that it has been received positively by many people around the world. Looking ahead, we plan to release a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. in April 2026, and a live-action movie of The Legend of Zelda in May 2027.”

He also explained that Nintendo isn’t just handing off its characters to any studio. Instead, they’re getting deeply involved in the process. “Rather than simply licensing our IP to film production companies, we are taking a proactive approach where Nintendo itself is deeply involved in production and makes investments as needed. This approach allows us to maintain a strong commitment to the quality of the final product,” Furukawa added.

While details are still under wraps, Furukawa confirmed that other projects are already in the works, even if they aren’t ready to be announced yet. So far, we know Mario and Zelda are locked in for future releases, but that’s not the end of the story.

One big question is about Pokémon, but that franchise has its own long-running animation and film projects handled separately. Nintendo likely won’t be leading any Pokémon films themselves, which leaves more room to give the spotlight to other game series.

Furukawa made it clear that Nintendo is not rushing out cheap game-to-movie adaptations. Their focus is on making high-quality films that fans can truly enjoy. “We are working on various other projects,” he said, and that’s all fans needed to hear to get hyped.

With a new Mario animated film on the way in 2026 and a Legend of Zelda live-action movie set for 2027, Nintendo is slowly building its own movie universe, and people are paying attention. If the quality stays high and fans stay interested, it looks like Nintendo’s big-screen adventure is just beginning.
