‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Trailer Gets Official Release Date as New Look Drops
The Mortal Kombat 2 trailer finally has a release date. Fans won’t have to wait long, as the trailer is coming out tomorrow, July 17, 2025. This was announced along with a brand new poster for the movie, showing the classic Mortal Kombat logo and confirming the movie’s official release date, October 24, 2025.
This upcoming film is the sequel to the 2021 live-action Mortal Kombat movie. According to Warner Bros. Pictures, Mortal Kombat 2 will bring back a lot of familiar faces. Hiroyuki Sanada returns as Scorpion, along with Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, and Max Huang as Kung Lao.

There will also be new characters joining the fight. Karl Urban is stepping in as Johnny Cage. Adeline Rudolph will play Kitana, Tati Gabrielle is taking the role of Jade, Martyn Ford will appear as Shao Kahn, Damon Herriman is playing Quan Chi, Desmond Chiam will be King Jerrod, and Ana Thu Nguyen is set to play Queen Sindel.
Mortal Kombat 2 is directed by Simon McQuoid, with a script by Jeremy Slater. The movie is based on the Mortal Kombat video games created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. This film is the fourth movie in the Mortal Kombat series and continues the story from the 2021 movie.
After the release of the first Mortal Kombat film in April 2021, plans for sequels started taking shape. Producer Todd Garner, writer Greg Russo, and director Simon McQuoid discussed several ideas, including a new movie focusing on Johnny Cage, as well as a story centered on Bi-Han. By 2022, Warner Bros. gave the green light for Mortal Kombat 2, bringing back McQuoid as director and hiring Slater to write the screenplay.
Filming for Mortal Kombat 2 began in Australia in June 2023. Production had to stop for a while in July because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Work on the movie picked up again in November and finished in January 2024.
Director Simon McQuoid said in an interview that Johnny Cage wasn’t in the first movie because his character has such a big personality that it might have unbalanced the story. He explained that future films could explore Cage and Kitana more. He also mentioned he wanted to add more female characters in upcoming stories.
Actor Joe Taslim, who plays Sub-Zero, shared that he signed a contract for up to four more Mortal Kombat movies, depending on how the franchise develops. Co-writer Greg Russo said he imagines the new movies as a trilogy, with the first film showing events before the tournament, the second film (this one) focusing on the tournament itself, and the third covering what happens after.
As for what fans can expect, Jeremy Slater said the sequel will lean into the strange side of the Mortal Kombat world. He explained that they want the new film to surprise fans and not stick too closely to what people expect.
So far, fans only have the poster as a first look. But tomorrow, the official trailer drops, giving everyone a proper glimpse of the next Mortal Kombat battle. This information comes directly from Warner Bros. and announcements shared by the filmmakers themselves.
