Naomi Watts Makes a Stylish Appearance at the ‘Closing Night’ Premiere

The Toronto International Film Festival has delivered no shortage of buzzy premieres this year, but few carried quite the emotional weight of Saturday night’s world premiere for ‘Closing Night.’ The film marks actor Cody Fern’s feature directorial debut, and it brought together a cast stacked with awards-caliber talent for a story built around decades of buried family tension.

‘Closing Night’ follows Sandra Vale, a hardened stage actress preparing for what could be the defining performance of her Broadway career, when her estranged sister April unexpectedly resurfaces in New York with her teenage son in tow. After thirty years apart, their reunion forces both women to confront a shared history neither has been willing to face, all while Sandra’s carefully controlled public image begins to unravel under the pressure.

Now, new photos have surfaced showing Naomi Watts, who plays April, arriving at the film’s TIFF premiere, marking a striking public reunion with her co-star Sarah Paulson. The two actresses walked the red carpet together as their long-in-development passion project finally made its way in front of an audience.

That reunion carries extra significance given how the pairing actually came together. Paulson and Watts had already worked side by side on Ryan Murphy’s Hulu series ‘All’s Fair,’ and according to reporting, it was Paulson herself who pushed to have Watts brought aboard ‘Closing Night’ once she read the script, effectively engineering the on-screen sisterhood herself.

That script, as it turns out, was written specifically with Paulson in mind from the very beginning. Fern, who previously starred alongside Paulson on ‘American Horror Story,’ told IndieWire that the character of Sandra was written for her, describing his approach to bringing her the project as an invitation to go somewhere meaningful together rather than a standard casting pitch.

Beyond Watts and Paulson, the ‘Closing Night’ cast rounds out with Dianne Wiest, Toby Wallace as Sandra’s son Theo, and Odessa A’zion, giving the ensemble considerable dramatic firepower for a story centered on fame, abandonment, and unresolved family wounds. The film screened as part of TIFF’s Special Presentations lineup, with premiere dates spanning both September 12 and 13.

Behind the camera, the project represents a genuinely international effort, filmed in Montreal earlier this year as an Australian-Canadian co-production backed by Screen Australia and Telefilm Canada. Producers Nancy Grant, Rosalie Chicoine Perreault, Will Howarth, and Matilda Comer shepherded the film alongside editor Dany Cooper, with the finished feature running just under two hours.

Early reaction out of Toronto has been notably positive, with reviews specifically singling out the trio of Paulson, Watts, and Wiest for their performances as a family of mothers pushed to their breaking points. That kind of reception only adds to the anticipation building around a film that’s clearly been a deeply personal undertaking for its first-time director.

For Watts, the premiere adds another notable credit to an already busy stretch of upcoming work, while for Paulson, it continues a partnership with Fern that traces back to their television collaboration years earlier. Whether the emotional weight of their on-screen sisterhood translates into awards attention remains to be seen, but the chemistry on display at Saturday’s premiere suggests the film found exactly the cast it needed.

With ‘Closing Night’ still awaiting a formal release date following its festival debut, audiences beyond Toronto will have to wait a bit longer to see how Sandra and April’s fractured relationship plays out.
