The latest installment of ‘NCIS: New York’ titled ‘Family Business’ premiered on CBS at 9:00 PM ET on October 13. A jewelry store robbery involving military explosives leads to the death of the jeweler’s son, and the team has to track down who was behind the heist. It gives Sam Hanna and Nick Schaeffer their first proper case together.

This ‘NCIS: New York’ recap covers the heist, the suspects and the confrontation that closes the hour. One preview described it as the first normal case with this team, and the first real test of the ensemble’s chemistry. Spoilers follow for anyone who has not yet watched.

Episode Recap of a Deadly Jewelry Store Robbery

The hour opens with a young couple entering a jewelry store long after closing time, since the man’s family owns the place and he wants to show his girlfriend a necklace. An explosion comes from below the vault and four masked men climb up, and the woman is unhurt while the man cannot get up.

The man is Ben Gellman, the jeweler’s son, and his girlfriend is Corrine. He wanted to show her his grandmother’s necklace, and the explosives made the floor beneath them give way. His condition worsens at the hospital and he dies, and Corrine cannot describe the robbers.

The robbery used C4, and the NYPD had been trying to find the crew for some time, though this was the first time they used explosives. At the scene, Sam and Nick realize they are probably dealing with rogue soldiers.

How Sam Hanna and Nick Schaeffer Track the Suspects

No missing explosives have been reported, so NCIS turns to the nearby naval depot and its records. Petty Officer Joaquin Ricci disappears moments after NCIS arrives to ask questions, telling a buddy that he has a family emergency. That makes him a primary suspect.

Addy and Wyatt search for Joaquin after a BOLO is issued, while Sam and Nick work the crime scene. The two agents also visit Joaquin’s older brother, Matteo, who took responsibility for him after their parents died. Matteo’s dismissive reaction to questions about his younger brother gives Sam reason to doubt the protective role he claims.

While Sam talks with Matteo, Nick notices an old football photograph and takes a picture of it. That choice pays off once investigators find the cleaning van used in the robbery, with its real owners tied up inside. DNA identifies two men with extensive criminal records, and both appear in the photograph.

The trail leads to Coach Villante, who presents himself as a mentor to his former players but is also a loan shark running a robbery operation.

Ending Explained With Matteo’s Debt and Joaquin’s Surrender

Matteo owes Villante $80,000, and his gambling has moved from phone apps to the coach’s operation. He draws Joaquin into working for Villante to pay the debt off. That is the family betrayal the title points toward.

Sam obtains Matteo’s confession, but Matteo still treats the losses as a temporary setback and believes Joaquin can be released after a few jobs. Sam challenges that belief, and he concludes that Joaquin was the person who protected the van’s owners.

In the final confrontation, Nick runs into the gunfight alone and stops Villante from escaping, suffering a concussion in the process. Sam persuades Joaquin to surrender and then arrests him. The ending separates the man who ran the crew from the young man pushed into it, without letting Joaquin avoid responsibility.

Supporting Cast and Where the New Team Goes Next

Wyatt Sellers is played by Shane Harper and Addy Ross by Jacqueline Byers, with Jennifer Beals as office director Robyn Wells and Devin Druid as computer specialist Sean Sullivan. The episode begins to make each of them feel more distinct as the series settles into regular casework.

Sean wants his work to reduce the time attached to his sentence, and Robyn is not inclined to make that easy for him. Addy and Wyatt remain colleagues and buddies, and the episode leaves room for greater closeness without establishing a couple.

LL Cool J told TV Insider at the premiere red carpet that there is no guarantee Sam will stay. The next episode, ‘Carousel,’ airs Tuesday, October 20, with the team investigating the kidnapping of a JAG prosecutor’s children while Nick receives a subpoena tied to an NYPD investigation. After watching Nick charge into a gunfight alone and walk away with a concussion, do you think his instinct to act first is an asset this new team can build around, or a risk that ‘Carousel’ will start to expose?
