‘NCIS’ Season 24 Episode 1 Recap & Ending Explained: Tony DiNozzo Takes the Director’s Chair

The premiere revealed that the person shot in the standoff was fan favorite Tony DiNozzo, played by Michael Weatherly. The previous finale had left viewers unsure whether Torres or McGee’s son Mateo was the target. That question drives much of this ‘NCIS’ premiere recap.

The episode, titled “Wayward Son,” aired on CBS on October 6 and marked the return of Tony. It also reshaped the agency’s leadership by the final scene, which is the heart of the ending explained below.

‘NCIS’ Premiere Recap and the Shooting Answer

The previous finale ended with a tense standoff between Torres and Mateo, played by Patrick Keleher. When McGee arrives at the scene in a panic, he finds that Torres is fine and Mateo is unhurt. Tony then emerges from an ambulance with his arm in a bloody sling.

Tony had heard a tip about Mateo’s involvement in a potential crime and went to investigate, having just returned to D.C. The bullet only injured his arm, and he made it out alive. Tony insists he was only barely grazed, and Mateo ran from the scene.

Kasie discovers that Mateo stole classified information about the Secretary of the Navy’s security detail. Mateo tells his father that forgers forced him to take the information as payback for helping him. The case becomes personal for McGee, who has to weigh his duty as an agent against his role as a father.

Why the Tony DiNozzo Return Works

Tony had just made it back to D.C. in hopes of opening a satellite office for his Europe based agency. That private security company is called Salus Mondiale. His entrance feels like a reunion at first, but the story has larger plans for him.

Showrunner Steven D. Binder explained the thinking behind the reveal to TheWrap. He said it would not be very exciting if the shooter or the target were simply Torres or Mateo, and that choosing Tony gets him into the show right away. The choice also keeps the focus on the mystery rather than on a feud between two core characters.

Tony was a senior field agent for thirteen seasons under Gibbs before leaving the series in 2016. Fans hoping for a Tony and Ziva reunion will be disappointed, because Cote de Pablo is not joining Weatherly this season. The episode does note that Tali is at a boarding school in Boston, with Ziva working at a language institute nearby.

NCIS Premiere Ending Explained

The case ends with Tony posing as a waiter at a diner to warn McGee and Mateo before LaRoche’s tactical team can grab the young man. LaRoche spots them and tries to take Mateo into custody, but Parker and Tony intervene. Catherine is rescued, Mateo’s name is cleared, and Parker gets his job back.

Before that, the team’s tumultuous regime change had seemed to point toward Parker’s team being disbanded by the end of the episode. That changed after a fateful meeting between the secretary of the Navy and Tony. She tells Tony she should not have let her first choice say no.

Binder said that hearing from the Secretary of the Navy that his country needs him, with his family’s blessing, is enough to make Tony sign on. The offer reframes the entire episode as an audition. It also explains why Tony stays involved after the shooting rather than simply walking away.

A New Director Reshapes the Agency

The episode’s biggest surprise is that Tony DiNozzo is the new Director of NCIS. He succeeds LaRoche, who has been fired. LaRoche had taken over as director after the death of Leon Vance last season.

LaRoche had also used his brief time in charge to suspend Torres. That makes the leadership swap a meaningful reset for the team. Tony now outranks the agents he once worked beside, and that dynamic gives the new season a clear source of tension and humor.

The premiere starts with questions about Mateo and a gunshot, but it ends by establishing the real story of the season. Tony’s arrival raises fresh questions about how he will run an agency full of former colleagues, and about how Parker will respond to a boss who is not technically an agent by training. Do you think Tony DiNozzo is the right person to lead ‘NCIS’ after the turbulence under LaRoche, and how should Parker’s team adjust to answering to him?
