The latest installment, titled “Clean Slate,” aired on CBS on October 13. It arrives a week after the premiere made Tony DiNozzo the agency’s director, and it shows him finally getting started in the job. This ‘NCIS’ recap and ending explained covers the dinner party case, the CIA connection, and the reveal that closes the hour.

The series airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern on CBS. Episodes can also be streamed on Paramount+. TV Fanatic gave the hour a critic’s rating of 4.2 out of 5. Spoilers follow for the entire episode.

The Dinner Party Case Recap

The case begins with a couple, Linda and Greg, hosting a dinner party that includes Naval Intelligence Officer Mallory. When Linda leaves the room for drinks, she returns to find her husband and every guest unconscious, and armed men enter the house. She hides in the pantry, and the whole operation is over quickly with no cash or jewelry taken.

The team learns that three of the guests burned evidence after the party, and then Linda reports that Greg never came home. His car is found with his body inside, and while police first pointed to a heart attack, traces of poison confirmed it was murder. A small brass key from his keychain leads Torres and Knight to a storage unit.

Inside the unit they find dozens of eyeballs, which turn out to belong to pigs rather than people. Kasie believes Greg was extracting an enzyme used in drug production. A fixer named Carl later explains that he was hired to recover a formula for a hair growth drug worth $30 billion after the research was stolen.

The Ending Explained and Why Tony Let Linda Go

The breakthrough comes when Kasie examines the house vacuum, whose motherboard triggered a fail safe and led the team to a hacker who had been paid to tap camera enabled smart devices nearby. That footage points back to the CIA, and agent Russell Cross tells Parker the agency had been tracking a deep cover operative with an unknown endgame. The CIA admits it gassed the scene but says it did not kill Greg.

Video from a dog feeder shows that Linda killed her husband. The pair were never actually married, and the arrangement was a cover that she protected by killing him after he put their operation at risk. One reviewer admitted missing that the couple were spies, even though the usual instinct is to look at the spouse first.

The episode’s most surprising turn comes when Tony stops McGee and the team from arresting Linda, believing she is part of something larger and could lead them to the people behind it. He hints that something big is coming, which suggests Linda is being kept in play to watch where she goes next.

Tony DiNozzo as NCIS Director

Tony opens the episode by calling an all hands meeting after a false biohazard alarm clears the building. He tells the team he has no grand vision, that their job is to solve cases, and that his job is to support them. Ziva has also asked Knight to keep an eye on his diet, which gives the character a lighter note.

That support turns out to include a lot of involvement. Tony drops in on the lab, asks for case updates, and joins Knight in the interrogation room, which prompts Torres and Knight to discuss how he is struggling to accept the role. It is the behavior many viewers feared, since it echoes the hands on approach of Gibbs more than the style of Vance.

McGee eventually asks him about it, and Tony explains that the director’s job can wear a person down and that working cases with the team is how he lets off steam. TV Fanatic described the reasoning as realistic and mature, and compared it to how Vance took time to find his footing.

McGee Gets an Unexpected Career Surprise

At the start of the episode Knight says Director McGee would have had a nice ring to it, and McGee replies that he was never likely on the shortlist. That exchange sets up the final scene.

Tony tells McGee that he was not passed over for the top job because of any shortcoming, since the Secretary of the Navy has her own position in mind for him. She plans to retire and wants McGee to take over her role. One critic called the earlier decisions to skip McGee for promotion a chess move nobody saw coming.

It is an unexpected direction for a character who has spent years inside the agency, and it gives the season a longer horizon beyond the weekly cases. Tony has also left a spy at large, so both storylines now point toward something bigger. Viewers who watched Tony let Linda walk away may want to say in the comments whether that gamble feels like smart strategy or the first real mistake of his tenure, and whether McGee in the Secretary of the Navy’s chair sounds like the right destination for him.
