‘Neagley’ Star Maria Sten Teases the Buried Secret Behind Her Reacher Character

Frances Neagley has spent three seasons as Jack Reacher’s sharpest ally, the kind of character fans love without ever really knowing where she came from. That mystery is about to change. Prime Video is finally giving her the spotlight, and the timing could not feel more deliberate.

The spinoff, produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Skydance Television and CBS Studios, follows Sten’s Frances Neagley, a private investigator operating in Jack Reacher’s orbit. The series will follow Neagley as she works as a private investigator in Chicago, and her life takes a dark turn when she discovers that a close friend from her past has died under suspicious circumstances. Determined to find the truth, she uses everything she learned from Jack Reacher and her time with the 110th Special Investigators to uncover a dangerous secret.

At San Diego Comic Con, Sten sat down with Variety and confirmed what fans have wanted for years, that ‘Neagley’ will finally dig into her character’s hidden past. She explained that there is a whole mystery behind her background and why she became the person she is, and that it feels exciting for people to finally learn what her deal is, since that exploration is exactly what the show plans to cover.

That kind of teaser lines up with what Sten has said elsewhere about protecting the show’s identity. She has described the tone as staying true to what made ‘Reacher’ work, keeping the same fun, splashy action and quick dialogue, while giving the material something distinctly her own rather than simply mirroring the flagship series. Showrunners Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton have echoed that sentiment, noting that Lee Child created an immensely rich character with Neagley, and that Sten brought her to life in such a vivid, authentic way that they were eager to explore her story further.

Notably, the stories told in ‘Neagley’ will not be pulled from Child’s novels, meaning this is entirely original material built around a character who previously only existed in the margins of someone else’s story. That is a rare vote of confidence for a supporting player, and it says plenty about how much the character has resonated with audiences since the flagship show began.

Lee Child himself has been vocal about Sten’s impact on the role. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the author admitted that Sten has become the surprise star of the show to him, and that whenever he pictures Neagley now, he sees Sten in the part.

The ensemble surrounding her includes Greyston Holt as Detective Hudson Riley, Adeline Rudolph as Renee Birdwhistle, Jasper Jones as Keno, Matthew Del Negro as Pierce Woodrow and Damon Herriman as Lawrence Cole, with Alan Ritchson returning to guest star as Jack Reacher himself. ‘Reacher’ season four returns August 12, 2026 with its first three episodes before rolling out weekly, and once that season wraps, all eight episodes of ‘Neagley’ will drop together on September 16, exclusively on Prime Video.
