Netflix Announces Sequel to Its Most Watched Movie of All Time
Fans of the global animated phenomenon KPop Demon Hunters have reason to celebrate, as Netflix has officially greenlit a follow-up to the record-breaking film. The announcement, shared just days before the original project competes at the 98th Academy Awards, confirms that original directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to helm the sequel.
This project also serves as the inaugural work under a new exclusive, multi-year deal between the creative pair and the streaming giant. The original film, which premiered in June 2025 and was produced alongside Sony Pictures Animation, quickly became the most-watched movie in Netflix history.
By March, the musical adventure had surpassed 500 million views on the platform, captivating audiences with the story of the fictional K-pop girl group, HUNTR/X. By day, these idols are global superstars, but by night, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey utilize their music to power a protective magical barrier and defend humanity from soul-eating demons.
The creative team expressed deep gratitude for the fans who embraced this unique, Korean-inspired narrative. I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters, said Kang regarding the announcement.
There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning. Appelhans echoed this sentiment, adding, These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home.
We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together. Beyond its massive viewership, KPop Demon Hunters has become a powerhouse in the awards circuit, setting historic precedents for K-pop in Western media.
The film’s breakout anthem, “Golden,” performed by vocalists EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, made history by becoming the first K-pop song to win a Grammy Award. The film also secured top honors for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at both the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards.
As the production enters its early development phase, anticipation is building for how the story will expand. While no official release date has been set, industry insiders suggest a long development timeline is expected, given the high level of animation quality required for a project of this scale.
The sequel will continue to explore the intricate mythology of the demon-fighting idols while likely introducing new challenges to the universe. For fans eager to revisit the magic, the original film remains available to stream on Netflix.
With the original creative team reunited and the support of Sony Pictures Animation firmly behind them, the next chapter promises to maintain the unique blend of musical spectacle, action, and fantasy that defined the first film.
