Netflix Cancels ‘Sweet Magnolias’ After Five Seasons, but There’s a Silver Lining for Fans
Comfort dramas occupy a unique space in Netflix’s ecosystem, rarely dominating headlines the way splashy prestige series do, yet consistently pulling in loyal audiences season after season. For six years, “Sweet Magnolias” quietly filled exactly that role, becoming a reliable fixture for viewers seeking small-town warmth over prestige-drama tension.
That steady run has now come to an end. Just three months after its fifth season premiered, Netflix confirmed the series would not be returning, closing out a story that had followed the same trio of lifelong friends since 2020.
Netflix has canceled “Sweet Magnolias” after five seasons, Deadline first reported on September 18, ending the romantic drama’s six-year run on the platform. The decision comes after Season 5, which premiered June 11 with 10 episodes, drew 2.8 million views in its opening week, a 30% decline from Season 4’s premiere numbers. The season did climb to 3.5 million views in its first full week and spent three weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for English-language series before dropping out of the rankings.
According to Deadline, Netflix had been weighing two options: renewing “Sweet Magnolias” for a sixth and final season, or moving forward with a different project already gaining internal momentum. The streamer ultimately chose the latter, with the cast’s contract options allowed to expire Thursday night before the cancellation was confirmed the following day.
That “different project” turned out to be “Ladies of the House,” a new family drama based on Lauren Edmondson’s novel of the same name. The series reunites “Sweet Magnolias” showrunner and executive producer Sheryl J. Anderson with star JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who will executive produce and is reportedly being eyed to star.

For a show built on a modest budget that never became a true breakout hit but maintained a devoted fan following, the decision ultimately came down to cost versus performance, a calculation Netflix regularly applies when weighing renewals. Notably, the streamer also did not commission a Season 6 writers’ room ahead of time, the way it typically does for shows it plans to continue.
The show’s official social media accounts addressed the ending directly. A post from an Instagram account run by the show’s writing team read: “All grand adventures must eventually end. And here, dear friends, is where ours goes. Sweet Magnolias is now complete with five seasons streaming on Netflix… While this journey may be complete, the Sweet Magnolias will always be there for you when you need them most. Serenity will always be happy to see you.”

“Sweet Magnolias,” based on the book series by Sherryl Woods, starred JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley as three lifelong friends navigating relationships, careers, and family life in the fictional small town of Serenity, South Carolina. Across its five seasons and 50 total episodes, the show carved out a consistent niche as one of Netflix’s dependable comfort watches, even as its viewership gradually softened in its later years.
The cancellation also arrives just one week after Netflix pulled the plug on another series, “Ransom Canyon,” following its second season, continuing a broader pattern of the streamer trimming its slower-performing dramas. All five seasons of “Sweet Magnolias” remain available to stream on Netflix.
