Netflix has officially confirmed that its Japanese action series Last Samurai Standing will return for a second season. The news follows strong viewer interest after the first season ended with unresolved storylines. The confirmation comes directly from Netflix, after early signs appeared on social media earlier this month.

The first public hint came from Netflix France, which posted about the renewal before a global announcement. The post appeared on December 18 and said the series would be back for another season. Netflix later backed this up with an official video and statements from key people involved in the show.

Junichi Okada, who plays the lead role and also worked as a producer on the first season, welcomed the news and spoke about the show’s global reach.

“I’m pleased to see that Last Samurai Standing has reached global audiences and has been confirmed for a second season,” Okada said. “I’m excited to get back into this wild world and once again charge into battle with the production team.”

The show’s director, Michihito Fujii, also reacted to the renewal and said the success outside Japan was especially meaningful.

“I’m very pleased and relieved that Last Samurai Standing has been such a big hit outside Japan,” Fujii said. “I’m also honored to say that the series has officially been greenlit for a second season.” He added that the team plans to raise the scale and intensity in the next chapter.

Last Samurai Standing is based on the novel Ikusagami by Shogo Imamura. The series is set in Japan during the late 1800s and centers on a deadly contest involving hundreds of fighters. The winner must survive a long journey and defeat rivals along the way to claim a cash prize. The main character joins the fight to help his struggling family.

The series stars Junichi Okada, Yumia Fujisaki, and Kaya Kiyohara. It first appeared at the Busan International Film Festival in September before launching worldwide on Netflix in November, according to Netflix Japan. The first season includes six episodes.

Critics have responded very positively so far. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the show with a 100% approval rating based on early reviews, showing strong support from reviewers.

Netflix has not shared when season two will begin filming or when it will be released. For now, fans can expect the story to continue with more action and higher stakes.
