Netflix Drops a Stirring ‘La Bola Negra’ Trailer, and the Oscar Buzz Is Getting Louder

Every awards season has a film that builds momentum at exactly the right moment, and ‘La Bola Negra’ is quickly becoming this year’s frontrunner in the conversation. The Spanish drama comes from Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the directing duo widely known as “Los Javis.” It’s a sweeping, decades-spanning story that has already won over some of the toughest audiences on the festival circuit.

The film first made waves at the Cannes Film Festival, where Los Javis shared the Best Director award with Paweł Pawlikowski. Netflix acquired the project out of Cannes and has since launched a full awards campaign behind it.

Momentum only grew in Canada. At the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, ‘La Bola Negra’ won the People’s Choice Award, beating first runner-up ‘I Play Rocky’ and second runner-up ‘Being Heumann’. Los Javis weren’t present at the ceremony on September 20, but they left a note that was read aloud on their behalf.

That victory carries serious weight. Launched in 1978, the TIFF People’s Choice Award celebrates the festival’s top title as chosen by Toronto’s public audience, and it has become known as one of the most reliable Academy Awards predictors. In fact, only 1 People’s Choice winner in the last decade has missed out on a Best Picture nomination.

The story follows the interconnected lives of 3 gay men across 3 different eras. It moves between 1932 during the Second Spanish Republic, 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, and 2017 in modern-day Spain, with each generation linked through desire, pain, and love.

The film also boasts a notable cast. Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close both appear in the Spanish production, which runs roughly 2.5 hours. For its creators, the project has a clear purpose. Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, Calvo and Ambrossi explained that they set out to tell a story about freedom, legacy and the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility.

They added that, above all, they wanted to honor the generations whose courage and sacrifice made today’s freedoms possible. That emotional core seems to be exactly what connected with audiences. Critics at Cannes described the film as an unashamedly romantic drama that captured hearts.

The streamer is giving this one special treatment. Netflix is granting the film its longest theatrical release to date, with ‘La Bola Negra’ opening in theaters on October 16 before streaming begins on December 2.

That extended window signals how seriously Netflix is taking its Oscar chances. Some awards pundits have even argued that this is the best shot the streamer has ever had at winning the top prize.

Online, the excitement is palpable. One fan replying to the trailer post confidently predicted that ‘La Bola Negra’ will win Best Picture at the 99th Academy Awards when all is said and done.

The competition will be fierce, of course. TIFF’s other audience winners included Simon Stone’s ‘Elsinore’, which took the International People’s Choice Award with a performance by Andrew Scott as actor Ian Charleson, while ‘I Play Rocky’ also emerged as a crowd-pleaser.

Still, with a Cannes directing prize, a TIFF audience award and a rare extended theatrical rollout, ‘La Bola Negra’ has all the ingredients of a major awards contender. The coming months will reveal whether Los Javis can carry that momentum all the way to the Dolby Theatre.
