Netflix has officially given the green light to a live-action Assassin’s Creed series, and fans are finally getting excited about what’s next for the popular franchise. Roberto Patino and David Wiener, known for their work on shows like DMZ and Halo, will be leading the project as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.

According to a press release from Netflix, the series will dive deep into the secret war between the Templars and Assassins, two powerful groups fighting to control humanity’s future.

The show promises to be more than just action and adventure. Patino and Wiener described it as “about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith. It is about power and violence and s** and greed and vengeance. But more than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time.”

This suggests that the series will explore emotional and human themes alongside its thrilling storyline.

The road to this announcement hasn’t been smooth. Talks between Ubisoft and Netflix started as early as 2016, with various creators attached over the years. Jeb Stuart, the writer behind Die Hard, was once involved but left the project in early 2023. Since then, Patino and Wiener have taken the reins, working closely with Ubisoft to bring their vision to life.

Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s Vice President of Scripted Series, expressed excitement about the collaboration. He said, “When we first announced our partnership with Ubisoft in 2020, we set out with an ambitious goal to bring the rich, expansive world of Assassin’s Creed to life in bold new ways. Now, after years of dedicated collaboration, it’s inspiring to see just how far that vision has come.”

While the details about the historical settings or how the show will connect to the video game universe remain under wraps, the new series aims to offer something fresh and bold. Fans might also remember the 2016 Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender, which had mixed reviews. Ubisoft has taken lessons from that experience to guide this new project.

Assassin’s Creed has been a major franchise since its debut, with its mix of history, mystery, and epic battles between Assassins and Templars. The Netflix series looks set to explore those themes on a bigger scale and with a stronger focus on the human side of the story.

With Roberto Patino and David Wiener at the helm, this live-action series could be the next big hit for Assassin’s Creed and a new way to experience the world of the Brotherhood on screen.
