Netflix Pulls the Plug on Latest Thriller Series After Only One Season
Netflix has canceled the Spanish thriller series Billionaires’ Bunker (El refugio atómico) after just one season, according to Spanish news outlet El País. The streamer had originally planned for the show to continue, but behind-the-scenes decisions quietly ended the project.
The series premiered on September 19, and followed a group of billionaires hiding in a luxury, retro-futuristic bunker during World War III. The cast included Pau Simón, Alícia Falcó, Miren Ibarguren, Agustina Bisio, and Joaquín Furriel. Some of the filming took place at Netflix’s Tres Cantos campus near Madrid.
The cancellation is a surprising turn given how Netflix initially marketed the series as a flagship project for its Spanish programming. Season one ended on a major cliffhanger, leaving viewers without resolution for several key storylines.
Diego Ávalos, Netflix’s VP of Content in Spain, had previously praised the project, saying, “There has not been a series as ambitious in the history of Spain as El refugio atómico.”
Creator Álex Pina had also hinted at the potential for a second season. Speaking with Spanish site Espinof, he said, “We have thought about how to start things back again, since we had to do it in order to write the season finale. So what happens immediately afterwards is laid out, as well as ideas on how to get even more mean and hardcore. What we have not thought about yet is how season 2 would be mapped out.”
