Netflix Quietly Brings Back Controversial Anime, All Three Seasons Now Streaming
On October 20th, Sailor Moon: Crystal quietly returned to Netflix.
All three seasons of this controversial anime are now available to stream. For fans of the Sailor Scouts, there’s more than just Crystal on Netflix. The platform also has Sailor Moon Eternal and Sailor Moon Cosmos.
These two movies connect to each other like a one-two punch. Most anime fans have very different opinions about Eternal and Cosmos compared to Crystal.
If you want to watch the original Sailor Moon series, you’ll need to check other streaming platforms like Pluto TV, Prime Video, and Hulu. Still, fans have plenty of ways to enjoy the Sailor Scouts today.
Sailor Moon changed the world of anime when it first appeared. The show helped make the magical girl genre popular worldwide. It also wasn’t afraid to tackle stories that pushed boundaries.
In the mid-1990s, Sailor Moon S introduced two new characters, and they quickly became the center of discussion. The show added Haruka Tenoh, also known as Sailor Uranus, and Michiru Kaiou, Sailor Neptune. The two shared a romantic relationship, which was clear in the original Japanese version.
However, when Sailor Moon was adapted for international audiences, especially in North America, their romance was censored.
In the English dub, Haruka and Michiru were called cousins. This change caused a lot of confusion and made some scenes awkward. This was one of many edits that altered the story in the Western version.
Even with the censorship, the original portrayal of Haruka and Michiru in Japan was admired. They were mature, strong, and elegant, not the usual stereotypes that appeared in 90s shows.
Their chemistry added depth to Sailor Moon’s story, which mostly focused on Usagi and Mamoru’s love. Fans loved the pair for their unique personalities. Haruka had a confident, androgynous charm, while Michiru was calm and graceful. Their bond became one of the most memorable parts of the series.
Despite the censorship in the West, Sailor Moon still made a big impact on the LGBT+ community. The English dub’s changes are still remembered and sometimes mocked, but the original series set a strong example for representation in anime. Haruka and Michiru remain icons for fans who appreciate how the series handled their love story.
Netflix’s re-release of Sailor Moon: Crystal gives fans a chance to revisit these seasons, while the other Sailor Moon titles on the platform continue to bring the magic to a new generation. For those interested in the original storylines, though, exploring other streaming services is necessary.
Either way, Sailor Moon’s influence is bigger than ever, and fans of the Sailor Scouts have plenty to enjoy.
