Teen horror has a long tradition of turning high school drama into something far more sinister. From ‘Carrie’ to ‘Jennifer’s Body’, the genre has often used supernatural terror to explore the pressures and nightmares of growing up.

Netflix is now adding its own twist to that tradition with ‘The Body’, an 8-episode series created by Quinn Shephard. The filmmaker previously made the high school jealousy drama ‘Blame’ and the influencer satire ‘Not Okay’, and also created ‘Under the Bridge’.

Now, Netflix has released the first trailer for ‘The Body’, giving fans a chilling look at what’s to come. The series follows a group of badly behaved Catholic school girls who begin having prophetic visions after a dance-team initiation goes wrong, setting off mass hysteria in their town.

The trailer opens with a haunting question about what happened to a girl named Grace. From there, it delivers a whirlwind of debauchery, dance routines, and suspected demonic possession, all set to eerie music. The series premieres globally on Netflix on November 11. Its tagline, “Blessed are the girls with something to hide,” hints at the secrets waiting to be uncovered.

Shephard has described the series as a raunchy teen psychodrama with a dose of Catholic horror. She has called it a love letter to the ’90s and Y2K teen movies and erotic thrillers she grew up watching.

Among her inspirations are ‘Carrie’, ‘Jennifer’s Body’, ‘Heavenly Creatures’ and even ‘Mean Girls’, though she approached the material with a more grounded lens. Shephard also drew on her teenage fascination with ‘The Crucible’ and the Salem witch trials.

She has explained that she has long been interested in the idea of girlhood as a religious experience. Tonally, Shephard has described the show as gritty camp. The series stars Kristina Bogic as Anya Butler, Sara Boustany as Elise Zakaria, and Geena Meszaros as Lisbeth Anderson. Sofia Wylie plays Grace Franklin, while Nnamdi Asomugha appears as Father Franklin.

Louisa Krause plays Catherine Anderson, Shirley Chen plays Maddie Delaney, and Jackson Kelly plays Leo Anderson. ‘The Traitors’ alum Gabby Windey also joins the cast as Coach Miller.

A large recurring ensemble rounds out the series. It includes Kyra Pierce, Phallon Pierce, Marcel Ruiz, Orlando Norman, Ashley Madekwe, Motell Foster, Cale Ambrozic, Anna Tierney and Chloe Longname, among others. Shephard serves as creator and showrunner and directs the premiere episode. Riley Keough is among the executive producers.

The combination of Shephard’s sharp storytelling and the show’s eclectic cast has already generated buzz. Many fans have pointed to the influences she named as a sign the series could become a new cult favorite.

The trailer has quickly drawn attention online, racking up more than 100,000 views within hours. Viewers have praised its unsettling tone and its blend of teen drama with religious horror. With Halloween season in full swing, the timing of the trailer couldn’t be better. Horror fans now have another creepy series to add to their watchlists for November.

All 8 episodes of ‘The Body’ arrive on Netflix on November 11. Until then, the trailer offers plenty of mysteries for fans to dissect. Whether the girls’ visions are divine, demonic, or something else entirely remains to be seen. Either way, ‘The Body’ looks ready to deliver a wild and unsettling ride.
