Netflix is diving even deeper into the world of game-to-screen projects, and this time it’s setting sail for the island of Catan.

The streaming giant has landed the exclusive global rights to adapt the hit board game into movies and TV shows, according to an announcement from French tabletop publisher Asmodee on Tuesday.

Originally created by Klaus Teuber in 1995, Catan (first known as The Settlers of Catan) is one of the world’s most popular board games.

It takes place on an island where settlers compete to build, trade, and survive while dealing with limited resources, shifting alliances, and the occasional robber. Now, for the first time, those adventures are being brought to life on screen.

Netflix and Asmodee are planning to develop a mix of live-action and animated projects that explore the world of Catan in new ways.

The productions will also include unscripted content inspired by the game’s themes. Darren Kyman from Asmodee, Pete Fenlon from Catan Studio, and Klaus Teuber’s sons, Guido and Benjamin Teuber, will produce the projects. Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment is also attached to produce.

Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee, said he’s thrilled to see Catan reach new audiences. “Millions of people are enjoying Catan since it was created and for many, it remains a gateway to modern board gaming. I am thrilled to see the game expanding to a larger audience who will discover the richness of its universe,” he said. “It’s also a testament that board gaming is truly part of pop culture and a popular form of entertainment in everyone’s homes.”

Jinny Howe, head of Netflix’s U.S. and Canada scripted series, said the project offers endless storytelling potential. “Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” she said. “We’re thrilled to partner across series, features, animation, and games to bring this world to life for hardcore ‘Settlers’ and new fans alike.”

This new deal builds on an existing partnership between Netflix and Asmodee. The two companies previously worked together on the French film Family Pack, which was based on Asmodee’s card game The Werewolves of Millers Hollow. Asmodee has also created board games based on Netflix hits like Ozark, Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Bridgerton.

Benjamin and Guido Teuber, who now run Catan GmbH, said the Netflix collaboration continues their father’s dream. “When our father Klaus Teuber first introduced Catan thirty years ago, he imagined an aspirational world where people would gather by trading, building and settling together — both at the table and beyond it,” they said.

“This collaboration with Netflix marks an exciting new chapter in that journey. For three decades, Catan has connected families and friends around the world. Now, we’re thrilled to see it inspire storytelling on a global stage — staying true to our father’s vision of creativity, strategy and human connection.”

Netflix has been growing its lineup of game-inspired shows and films over the years. The streamer has found success with titles like Arcane and Castlevania, and it’s also working on adaptations of Assassin’s Creed, Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Clue, Monopoly, and Gears of War.

With Catan joining the mix, Netflix seems ready to explore even more stories from the gaming world, one trade and one settlement at a time.
