Netflix to End Another Popular Show With 73% Rotten Tomatoes Score This December
Netflix is officially closing the book on Lara Croft’s animated adventure. Variety has revealed that Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft will wrap up with its second season, which premieres on December 11.
The series, produced by Legendary Television, first hit Netflix in October 2024 and was quickly renewed. At the time, fans assumed more seasons would follow, but it’s now been confirmed that Season 2 will be the last.
This new chapter brings Lara, voiced by Hayley Atwell, into a hunt for stolen African Orisha masks.
According to the logline, “When adventurer Lara Croft discovers a trail of stolen African Orisha masks, she joins forces with her best friend Sam (Karen Fukuhara) to retrieve the precious artifacts.”
“Lara’s thrilling new adventure takes her around the globe as she delves deeper into the hidden secrets of Orisha history, dodging the machinations of a dangerous and enigmatic billionaire who wants the masks for herself, while discovering these relics contain dark secrets and a power that defies logic. Power that may, in fact, be divine.”
The cast also features O-T Fagbenle as Eshu, Allen Maldonado as Zip, and Earl Baylon as Jonah Maiava.
Behind the scenes, the show is written and executive produced by Tasha Huo. Other executive producers include Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, Jacob Robinson, Dallas Dickinson, Noah Hughes, and Jen Chambers. Powerhouse Animation, known for its work on Castlevania, brought the visuals to life, with Brad Graeber as executive producer.
Since its debut, the series has received solid reviews. Viewers and critics praised the sharp animation, the mix of action and myth, and Hayley Atwell’s energetic take on Lara Croft.
Some said the show felt like a return to the adventurous spirit of the video games, while others felt the pacing in the first season was uneven. Still, many fans were excited to see Lara back in action in a fresh way, and anticipation for the second season has been strong.
The animated series isn’t the only Tomb Raider project making headlines. Just days before this announcement, Amazon confirmed that Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s live-action Tomb Raider series for Prime Video is finally moving forward, with Sophie Turner set to play Lara Croft.
Both Story Kitchen and Crystal Dynamics, who also worked on the Netflix show, are involved in the new live-action version.
For now, Netflix viewers can look forward to one more globe-trotting, artifact-chasing adventure before The Legend of Lara Croft comes to a close this December.
