Netflix’s ‘Below’ Reveals a Chilling New Look at Its Mysterious Sea Monster

Netflix is heading into the ocean for its next big creature thriller, and Below looks like it could be one of the streaming service’s most atmospheric releases of the fall. The six-episode limited series has now revealed its first official poster, giving viewers an early taste of the cold and unsettling world waiting beneath the surface. With Josh Hartnett leading the cast and a mysterious creature at the heart of the story, the series is mixing horror with a much more personal family story.

The first poster arrives just before Below makes its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10 as part of the festival’s Primetime lineup. Netflix has also confirmed that the full series will arrive on the platform on October 8. That means viewers will not have to wait long after the TIFF debut to find out what the show is really hiding.

At the center of the story is Calvin Penney, played by Hartnett. Calvin is a fisherman living in a small Newfoundland community where life has always been closely connected to the sea. He is also carrying a painful past. His father died under mysterious circumstances many years ago, and those old questions begin to matter again when a strange creature starts attacking the town.

Calvin is not only fighting to keep the people around him safe. He is also trying to hold his family together as the danger grows. His children have their own problems, and some of them have returned home after spending time away. His son Wade, played by Charlie Heaton, is still trying to figure out where his life is going. Their family problems become even harder to deal with when something terrifying begins coming out of the water.

The monster mystery also brings Calvin together with Fonda Howander, a marine researcher played by Mackenzie Davis. The two begin looking into the creature and the strange history surrounding the area. Instead of simply running from a monster, they are trying to understand where it came from and why it has appeared now. The official description from Netflix says the series will combine suspense, local mythology, humor, and family drama, suggesting that the creature is only one part of a much larger story.

The Newfoundland setting could end up being one of the show’s biggest strengths. According to the production information, Below was filmed on location in St. John’s, Newfoundland. That gives the series a real connection to the fishing community it is trying to portray. The cold coastline, huge stretches of water, and iceberg-filled scenery also give the story a naturally eerie look. It is the kind of place where the ocean can feel beautiful one minute and threatening the next.

The cast includes several other familiar faces, with Ruby Stokes, Kaleb Horn, Rohan Campbell, and Willow Kean joining Hartnett, Heaton, and Davis. Jimmy Tatro is also part of the wider cast. The large group should allow the series to spend time building the small-town community instead of making everything about the central monster.

Behind the camera, Below comes from Jesse McKeown, who serves as creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Hartnett is also an executive producer, working alongside Jessica Rhoades, Chris Hatcher, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton, and Sharon Hall. McKeown’s previous work on The Umbrella Academy also gives the series some genre experience behind the scenes.

The new poster does not reveal much about the creature itself, which may be exactly what Netflix wants. Keeping the monster hidden for now allows the mystery to grow while the audience gets familiar with Calvin and his family. When Below premieres at TIFF, the first reactions should give fans a better idea of whether the series can deliver more than just a standard sea monster story.

For now, the combination of Josh Hartnett, a remote Newfoundland setting, family secrets, and something dangerous hiding beneath the ocean makes Below an interesting addition to Netflix’s fall lineup. The series premieres on Netflix on October 8, just weeks after its TIFF debut, so viewers will not have to wait very long before they can finally see what is lurking below.
