Netflix has been steadily building its Thai catalog into a global force, and its next big swing is shaping up to be one of its most ambitious yet. ‘Empress of Flames’ is a new Thai historical drama that reimagines one of the country’s most iconic lakorn titles on an unprecedented scale.

The streamer’s investment in the region has already paid off. To date, 33 Thai titles have charted in Netflix’s Global Top 10, including 17 Thai originals, with hits like ‘Hunger’, ‘Master of the House’ and ‘Mad Unicorn’ helping Thai content generate more than 750 million viewing hours worldwide.

Now, Netflix has unveiled the first official images from the series, which premieres worldwide on December 3. The stills show the leads in richly detailed period costumes, from ornate gold jewelry and embroidered robes to deep crimson fabrics, offering a taste of the show’s lavish production design.

According to the streamer, the production design team built an entirely new world for the series, with sets meant to tell a story of their own. Even the throne was designed to reflect both the perspective of those sitting above it and those kneeling beneath its power.

The official synopsis follows a fallen princess of royal blood who navigates treachery and betrayal, sacrificing her virtue for vengeance as she fights to reclaim her throne. Netflix has labeled the series as epic, ensemble-driven, and full of secrets, giving it a TV-MA rating.

The story kicks off when Buraphakham, the eldest heir of Queen Tawanthip, launches a bloody rebellion and assassinates King Phuka in front of the entire court, shattering an age of peace. Ananthip, the king’s only surviving descendant, loses everything and is forced into exile.

Her road back is full of palace conspiracies. Sekharathewi, once a cherished friend, becomes a fierce rival, while Muang Khum, the man she loves, serves as her last refuge, and Tongnual, a princess from the Kingdom of Meed, uses charm and wealth to advance her own goals.

Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul, known from ‘My Dearest Assassin’, leads the cast as Ananthip. Narilya Gulmongkolpech, who appeared in the streaming hit ‘Master of the House’, plays Sekharathewi.

Prin Suparat stars as Muang Khum, Pakorn Chatborrirak plays Buraphakham and Amanda Obdam portrays Tongnual. Khemanit Jamikorn takes on Queen Tawanthip, a new character added for this version, while Napasranch Mittiraroch plays King Phuka.

Luevisadpaibul has described the role as demanding. In Netflix’s first-look announcement, she explained that because Ananthip constantly faces extreme and violent situations, “I needed to do a lot of preparation for the role,” including extra workshops.

Behind the camera, director Sivaroj Kongsakul and Kantana Motion Pictures reunite with Netflix following the success of ‘Master of the House’. The script comes from a writing team of Titipong Chaisati, Nuttapot Potchumnean, Gift Nattamol Paethanom, Nut Nualpang and Jan Weerasu Worrapot.

Interestingly, Sivaroj admitted he had never watched any earlier versions of the story before taking it on. That fresh perspective could help the series feel distinct from previous adaptations, especially for longtime fans of the original lakorn.

Jamikorn has also teased that her character will add depth to the conflict. She explained that Tawanthip allows viewers to understand the reasons behind the destruction and war, with her story gradually unfolding across the season.

A teaser released months ago already highlighted the massive scale of the production. With its December premiere, the series is positioned as a potential highlight of Netflix’s international lineup heading into the holidays. If it lives up to its ambition, ‘Empress of Flames’ could become one of the most significant Thai originals the platform has released so far.
