‘Fool Night’ is a seinen manga by Kasumi Yasuda that has built a strong global following since its debut. The series has been serialized in Shogakukan’s ‘Big Comic Superior’ since November 2020, and 13 volumes have been released as of June 30.

Its haunting premise has also crossed borders. VIZ Media publishes the manga in English in North America, and Shogakukan Asia handles its release in Southeast Asia. Now the series is heading to screens worldwide.

As Netflix announced, ‘Fool Night’, the anime adaptation of the globally popular manga, premieres on November 26 and marks the first-ever collaboration between animation studios Sunrise and SHAFT.

Netflix teased the release with a stark question: “Live as a flower, or die as a human?” The streamer also shared new footage, and Anime Corner reports that a fresh trailer arrived alongside the confirmed premiere date.

The story is set in a distant future where clouds have blocked out the sun for about a century. With plants withering and oxygen running low, society has come to depend on “transfloration,” a process that turns people into plants.

According to Wikipedia’s summary of the manga, people can be transformed in exchange for funding provided over 2 years. The concept creates a bleak trade-off at the heart of the series.

The story follows Toshiro Kamiya, a poor young man whose dream of becoming a musician seems out of reach. He asks his friend Yomiko Horai to help with his transformation.

Afterward, Toshiro discovers he can understand the language of plants. That ability leads him to a new job acting as a go-between for transformed people and their loved ones, a setup that blends mystery, tragedy, and dystopian drama.

Atsushi Yukawa makes his directorial debut with the series, with Ryo Shimura serving as assistant director. Jin Tanaka is in charge of series composition, Robert Sato designed the characters, and Tatsuya Kato composed the music.

The staff also includes Ryo Kikuchi on visual development, Maki Takano of J.C.STAFF as background director, and Hitoshi Hibino on color design. Rie Matsubara handles editing, and Yota Tsuruoka is the sound director.

Koki Uchiyama voices Toshiro Kamiya, and Minako Kotobuki plays Yomiko Horai. Aya Endo joins as Saeko Kanaeno, Junya Enoki plays Akira Yatsuka, and Kiyomitsu Mizuchi voices Jin Hiragishi.

For the English dub, Adam McArthur and Olivia Liang have been announced as part of the cast. Their specific roles have not been detailed in Anime Corner’s report. The pairing of Sunrise and SHAFT is a big part of the buzz around the series. Bringing the 2 studios together for the first time gives the adaptation a strong creative pedigree as it heads to a worldwide audience.

The anime was first announced in June, with Netflix planning a global release. As an original net animation streaming exclusively on Netflix, it will reach viewers around the world on the same day.

What’s on Netflix lists ‘Fool Night’ among the new anime arriving on the service in November, alongside ‘Bass X Machina’. With its unusual premise and acclaimed source material, it stands out as one of the month’s most intriguing releases.
