“Griselda Week 1! This has been a passion project of mine for many years! So happy for being able to be a part of creating all of these job opportunities for latino actors and for me to FINALLY be able to work alongside an incredible Latin American cast and director! To bring this story to life is a dream come true! Gracias a todos por estar aqui!!” — Sofia Vergara
Vergara is playing Griselda Blanco, a notorious woman who created one of the most profitable drug cartels ever. Also known as Cocaine Godmother or Black Widow, was one of the most notorious drug bosses during the ’80s and ’90s. During the 20 years of her career, Blanco is suspected to have been responsible for as many as 200 murders in cocaine smuggling from Colombia to New York, Miami, and Southern California.
Blanco was born in Colombia in 1943. She emigrated to the United States in the mid-1970s with a fake passport, and there she began building her drug empire. She quickly came on the radar of DEA, and she fled back to Colombia, but also continued her work from there. During 1984, there were several unsuccessful assassination attempts on her, causing her to flee to the United States again, this time to California. In 1985, she was arrested by DEA agents and then sentenced to prison. Yet, even during her time in prison, she continued to run the business successfully through her son Michael Blanco. In 2004, she was released from prison and deported back to Colombia. She was killed in September 2012 after being hit with two gunshots to the head, she was 69 years old.
The series will consist of six episodes. Sofia Vergara is also an executive producer on the project. Ingrid Escajeda serves as the showrunner, while Eric Newman, Doug Miro, Andrés Baiz, and Carlo Bernard, who worked on Narcos, are also working on the series. Despite the setting, the series isn’t related to the previous Narcos shows. The series is also starring Alberto Guerra, Vanessa Ferlito, Alberto Ammann, Christian Tappan, Diego Trujillo, Paulina Davila, Gabriel Sloyer, Juliana Aidén MartinezMartin Rodriguez, José Zúñiga, Maximiliano Hernández, and Julieth Restrepo.
Griselda isn’t the only project adapting Blanco’s life story. Catherine Zeta-Jones played Blanco in the 2018 movie Cocaine Godmother, while Jennifer Lopez is set to play Blanco in Reed Morano’s biopic.
