Netflix’s ‘Minecraft’ Animated Series Isn’t Canceled, but Don’t Expect It Anytime Soon

Rumors about a canceled project have a way of spreading fast, especially when a show goes quiet for months without any real updates. That’s exactly what happened with one of Netflix’s most anticipated animated projects, as silence from the streamer left fans speculating about whether the show had quietly died behind the scenes.

That speculation reached a boiling point earlier this summer when the project was notably absent from Netflix’s showcase at the Annecy Animation Festival, a major venue where the streamer typically highlights its upcoming slate. For a series based on one of the best-selling video games of all time, the lack of visibility felt like a bad omen to worried fans.

Is Netflix’s ‘Minecraft‘ animated series canceled? No. Both Netflix and Mojang’s Jens Bergensten have confirmed the WildBrain-produced series is still in production, though fans shouldn’t expect it to hit screens anytime soon.

The clearest confirmation came directly from Bergensten himself, Minecraft’s Lead Designer and Creative Director, who took to Bluesky on August 28 to shut down the cancellation talk. Replying to a fan account asking for a status update, Bergensten wrote simply, “Yes we are still working on it!” It wasn’t the first time he’d addressed the rumors either, having previously responded to a similar inquiry back in June with a comparable confirmation that the project remained active.

The series was first announced back in May 2024, timed to coincide with the game’s 15th anniversary, with Netflix describing it as an original story featuring new characters that would show the Minecraft world “in a new light.” WildBrain, the animation studio behind Netflix hits like ‘Sonic Prime’ and ‘Carmen Sandiego,’ was brought on to handle the CG animation, working alongside Mojang Studios and Netflix as co-producers.

The last substantial public update came over a year ago at the 2025 Annecy Animation Festival, where the project’s core creative team was revealed alongside some early concept art and stills. Since then, updates have been sparse, and many people attached to the production still list their involvement as current employment, offering another quiet signal that work hasn’t stopped.

Given how long animated productions typically take to move from greenlight to release, the extended silence isn’t necessarily unusual. Major Netflix animated series often require three to four years of development before reaching screens, and if that timeline holds here, a 2027 release looks like the earliest realistic target, with 2028 also very much on the table.

For a franchise as massive as Minecraft, which has sold more than 300 million copies and continues to draw a huge active player base, the eventual payoff of getting the show right likely outweighs the pressure to rush it out. Netflix has shown similar patience with other major animated projects in its pipeline before.

Fans hoping for a trailer or a firm release window will likely need to keep waiting a while longer, but at least the core question hanging over the project has now been answered directly by the people actually making it. The ‘Minecraft’ animated series is very much alive, even if its arrival is still a ways off.
