Netflix’s New Swedish Noir Series Just Knocked ‘Outer Banks’ off the #1 Spot
Nordic noir has quietly become one of Netflix’s most reliable genres, with Scandinavian crime dramas consistently punching above their weight against flashier, higher-budget originals. That track record made the streamer’s latest Swedish import worth watching closely from the moment it dropped, even with the platform’s biggest ongoing hit still commanding global attention.
That hit was ‘Outer Banks,’ whose fifth and final season had spent the past several weeks dominating Netflix’s charts across dozens of countries as fans said goodbye to the Pogues. Given the show’s massive built-in audience and the emotional pull of a series finale, unseating it from the top spot seemed like a tall order for pretty much anything releasing around the same time.
That’s exactly what happened anyway. ‘Blood Sacrifice,’ a five-episode Swedish crime thriller that premiered August 20, has climbed to the number one spot on Netflix’s global charts, officially dethroning ‘Outer Banks’ just as the beloved series was wrapping its run.
Created by George Kay, the writer behind ‘Lupin,’ ‘Hijack,’ and ‘Killing Eve,’ ‘Blood Sacrifice’ follows Stockholm detective Thomas Berg, played by Jakob Oftebro, as he investigates a string of ritualistic murders targeting police officers responding to emergency calls. The case forces Berg into an uneasy partnership with his estranged father, Alfred, a disgraced former detective played by Peter Andersson, best known internationally for ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.’
Filmed across Stockholm and its surrounding archipelago, the series leans into an unusual visual choice for the genre, setting its investigation during Sweden’s nearly nightless summer rather than the dark, snowbound atmosphere typically associated with Nordic noir. Kay described the show’s emotional core in Netflix’s own announcement of the series, saying, “At its heart, Blood Sacrifice is a love story between an estranged father and son.”
Critical reception has been decidedly split. Some reviewers have praised the show’s atmospheric daylight setting and compact five-episode structure as an easy, satisfying binge, while others have felt the mystery leans too heavily on genre staples without fully delivering on its early promise, with a handful of critiques pointing to a less-than-satisfying final stretch of episodes.
That divide hasn’t stopped audiences from making it Netflix’s most-watched title worldwide within days of release. Even one report noting the show’s rapid rise pointed out that it had already claimed the number one spot in a dozen individual regions before ultimately overtaking ‘Outer Banks’ on the platform’s overall global chart.
The show’s supporting cast rounds out with Electra Hallman as fellow detective Natalie Eklund, along with Alexander Abdallah, Henrik Norlén, and Lisette T., all drawn from a roster of performers with deep roots in Scandinavian crime television. Directed by Kristoffer Nyholm, known for his work on ‘The Killing’ and ‘Taboo,’ the series was produced by B-Reel Films and Observatory Pictures in association with New Pictures.
Whether ‘Blood Sacrifice’ holds onto its top spot as more viewers finish ‘Outer Banks’ remains to be seen, but for now, it’s proven that a tightly wound, five-episode Scandinavian crime drama can still dethrone one of Netflix’s biggest franchises at the exact moment that franchise is taking its final bow.
