Netflix’s ‘Steps’ Trailer Finally Answers What Cinderella’s ‘Evil’ Stepsisters Were Really Up To

Fairy tales have a funny way of only telling one side of the story. For nearly four centuries, Cinderella’s stepsisters have been cast as little more than cruel, one-note villains standing between a scullery maid and her happily ever after.

Netflix has spent the last few years quietly building a reputation for flipping animated classics on their heads, and this latest project continues that streak in a big way. The streamer has been teasing a stepsister-centered spin on the Cinderella mythology for a while now, and audiences are finally getting their first real look at what that story actually is.

Netflix has released the first trailer for ‘Steps,’ an animated fantasy comedy that reimagines Cinderella’s stepsisters, Lilith and Margot, as the true heroes of their own adventure. The film is set to premiere on Netflix on November 20, and the new footage makes clear this will be a far more chaotic ride than the fairy tale ever let on.

The trailer opens with the familiar version of events, narrating Cinderella’s torment at the hands of her wicked stepfamily. Lilith quickly interrupts to set the record straight, insisting viewers “deserve to know the real story,” one she promises involves princes, glass slippers, and royal balls, but also revenge, high-speed chases, and what she calls “a really hot troll.”

That troll, named Gef, is voiced by ‘The Last of Us’ star Young Mazino, and he is just one piece of a much stranger world than the original tale ever hinted at. The footage also introduces the tyrannical Priscilla, who seizes power after Lilith and Margot’s scheme spirals out of control, along with the imposing hunter Roderick tracking the sisters through the kingdom.

The plot centers on Lilith, tired of living in her famous stepsister’s shadow, deciding to steal the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand and crash the Royal Ball alongside Margot. The plan backfires spectacularly, dooming the kingdom to Priscilla’s tyrannical rule and forcing the stepsisters into an unlikely alliance with Cinderella herself to fix the mess they made.

From there, the story pushes well beyond anything Charles Perrault could have imagined, sending the characters through a setting called the Screaming Woods and into confrontations with sword-wielding henchmen and biker trolls. It is a significantly bigger, weirder world than the ballroom-and-pumpkin-carriage version most audiences grew up with.

‘Steps’ brings together a genuinely stacked voice cast to pull off its tonal balancing act. Ali Wong voices Lilith and Stephanie Hsu plays Margot, with Amanda Seyfried stepping into the role of Cinderella and Bette Midler lending her voice to the Fairy Godmother.

Nikki Glaser voices the newly tyrannical Priscilla, while Daniel Radcliffe, Peter Dinklage, and WWE star Damian Priest round out a cast that spans comedy, prestige drama, and pro wrestling. Director Alyce Tzue, known for her work on ‘Soar,’ oversees the project, which was animated across Netflix Animation Studios’ Sydney and Vancouver locations.

The timing is notable, too. ‘Steps’ was first floated back in 2021 with a different creative team attached before stalling out, only to be revived after the breakout success of ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ reinforced Netflix’s appetite for irreverent, genre-bending animated fairy tales.
