Netflix’s ‘The Mosquito Bowl’ Trailer Teases a Powerful War Story About Football, Brotherhood and Sacrifice

A football game is usually about winning, losing and making it to the next season. The Mosquito Bowl takes that idea somewhere much darker. Peter Berg’s new Netflix movie follows four talented college football players who leave their lives behind after Pearl Harbor and end up serving as Marines during World War II. Now, the first trailer gives audiences a look at the friendships, fear and sacrifice waiting for them.

The movie is based on Buzz Bissinger’s nonfiction book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. The story centers on a real football game played by Marines before the Battle of Okinawa. What makes the story so unusual is what happened around the game. The players were not simply athletes looking for another victory. They were young men preparing to enter one of the most dangerous periods of the war.

Nicholas Galitzine leads the cast as John McLaughry, a quarterback from Brown University. His character comes from a football family and has already learned what it means to lead a team. Once he joins the Marines, however, the rules change completely. The confidence and discipline that helped him on the football field now have to carry him through military training and the reality of combat.

Bill Skarsgård plays Bob Baumann, another college football star who joins the same journey. Ray Nicholson appears as Purdue player Tony Butkovich, while Tom Francis plays David Schreiner, Baumann’s teammate at Wisconsin. The four characters come from different backgrounds, but football gives them something in common before the war turns that connection into something much deeper.

The trailer makes it clear that the movie is not simply going to be another football story with a war setting. The game is part of the bigger picture, but the real focus is the bond between the men. They train together, joke together and face the same dangers. As their situation becomes more serious, the friendship they built through football becomes one of the few things they can hold on to.

That connection was also important for the actors making the film. Galitzine told Netflix’s Tudum that Berg wanted the cast to experience the physical side of the story in a very direct way. According to the actor, the production used limited stunt doubles, with the performers taking on demanding scenes involving explosions and fire. The goal was to make the action feel as real as possible instead of making everything look polished and safe.

That style fits Berg well. The director has spent much of his career working on stories based on real events, including Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor. The Mosquito Bowl gives him a chance to combine the sports world he knows with the military drama he has explored before. This time, the football field and the battlefield are connected by the same idea of teamwork and trust.

The movie also has a strong group of filmmakers behind it. Berg directs and produces through Film 44, while Brian Grazer and Imagine Entertainment are also involved. Alex Gayner is a producer, and Bissinger serves as an executive producer. That involvement gives the film a direct connection to the book that first brought the story to a wider audience.

The story itself is especially striking because the four athletes had promising futures ahead of them. They could have continued playing football and built careers around the sport. Instead, the attack on Pearl Harbor changed the direction of their lives. Their decision to enlist meant giving up the comfort and excitement of college athletics for military service.

The Mosquito Bowl will first arrive in select theaters on October 30 before reaching Netflix on November 25. The release gives the film a chance to play on the big screen before becoming available to a much wider streaming audience. Netflix’s Tudum provided comments from Galitzine about the demanding production, while the film’s story is based on Bissinger’s book and the real events surrounding the Mosquito Bowl.
