Netflix’s Twilight Reboot ‘Midnight Sun’ Just Made Its Biggest Casting Move Yet
Twilight fans have spent years waiting for any real sign of movement on Netflix’s animated take on the beloved vampire saga. The project has floated in development limbo since it was first unveiled, with only scattered updates trickling out to keep the fandom’s hopes alive. Now, nearly two years later, the wait finally appears to be paying off.
According to a new report, casting is officially underway for ‘Midnight Sun,’ Netflix’s animated adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s companion novel that retells the original ‘Twilight’ story from Edward Cullen’s perspective. The update comes from What’s on Netflix, which verified a casting document confirming the search is on for two key Quileute roles, Jacob Black and his father Billy Black. Notably, the casting call does not require any prior voiceover experience, leaving the door open for a wide range of talent to audition.
The series has a stacked list of names attached behind the scenes. Stephenie Meyer serves as executive producer alongside Sinead Daly, who is officially the showrunner. Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Erik Feig, Meghan Hibbett, and Emily Wissink round out the producing team, with Fickle Fish Films producing under the banner Midnight Sun Productions. Lynn Wang is attached as supervising director, while Melissa Kostenbauder is casting director alongside associate Jake Warnecke.
Given how early the casting process still is for the show’s central characters, patience remains the name of the game. Voices for Edward, Bella, and the rest of the Forks residents have not yet been announced, and the current production timeline suggests the series is unlikely to premiere before late 2027, with 2028 seen as more realistic.
Part of the intrigue swirling around ‘Midnight Sun’ is the question of legacy casting. The original ‘Twilight Saga’ films made household names out of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner, but reports have indicated that several original cast members will not be reprising their roles this time around. That leaves the animated version free to build an entirely fresh voice cast, starting with the newly announced search for Jacob and Billy.
How excited are you for 'Midnight Sun?'
The project’s journey has been a long one, first surfacing publicly in September 2024 when Netflix confirmed the show was in development. Since then, updates have been few and far between, making this fresh casting call feel like genuine forward motion rather than another quiet stretch of silence. For a fandom that has weathered years of uncertainty, even incremental news like this carries real weight.
With ‘Midnight Sun’ finally showing signs of life, the bigger question now turns to who might step into Edward Cullen’s shoes for this animated reimagining. Do you think this new version can carve out its own identity, or will it always live in the shadow of the original film saga?
