Fans of the Avatar series got a new look at the upcoming film Avatar: Fire and Ash this week when the official Avatar social media account shared a sneak peek.

The post teased: “Catch an exclusive look at Avatar: Fire and Ash during Monday Night Football on ESPN. Experience the film only in theatres December 19. Tickets on sale Monday.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third film in James Cameron’s epic science fiction saga, following Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). The movie brings back familiar cast members, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet. Cameron co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, building on a story they created with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno.

The film has had a long and complex production. Cameron first hinted at sequels in 2006, after the success of the original Avatar, and announced multiple follow-ups in 2010. To bring the new stories to life, the team developed advanced underwater performance capture technology, a technique that had never been fully achieved before. Filming for Fire and Ash started in New Zealand on September 25, 2017, and lasted more than three years, wrapping up in December 2020.

The movie’s release has been delayed several times. The latest schedule sets the U.S. premiere for December 19. Cameron is also working on two more sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, which are planned for 2029 and 2031.
